I will be traveling to San Francisco next week - any suggestions on what to pack?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) November 6th, 2009

I know the weather says the high will be in the lower 60s for most of the week but I assume lower 60s in SF is different than the lower 60s in NY. Any suggestions on what kind of clothing I should be packing?

Anything wind/water proof. It’s a moist chill and it can go right to the bones.

Bring a fleece or fall jacket that you can carry around and easily take on and off. The microclimates are such that it can feel like 70s (and you want to wear a t-shirt) in one area and then within minutes feel like 40s-50s in another if the fog rolls in. I would also suggest a warm hat that can also be easily packed in a backpack.

Comfortable shoes for walking the hills. Layers.

@marina bingo. A sweater, unless you’ll visit Alcatraz- then it’s called a parka.

Oh! I almost forgot! Money- pack lots of money.

Dry weather forecast for this week.
The biggest selling tourist item in SF is the sweatshirt. There is a reason. Ocean breezes pass through your clothes and go straight to your bones. Pack for cold weather.
Enjoy your time in the most beautiful city in the world!
