Why does my PS3 hate my Broadband connection?

Asked by TheRocketPig (612points) November 6th, 2009

Hey Everybody,

Ok, so for some time now I have had troubles with intermittent disconnects and general slowness on the Playstation Network. I assumed it was the router and port forwarded it.
No luck.
I disconnected the wireless router (Apple Airport Extreme n) and connected the PS3 straight into the cable modem (I have Road Runner)
No luck.
I bought a new PS3 slim and did all the above to it as well.
No luck. and no different than my other PS3 (I’m returning the new one today)

Aside from what I’ve already done, I’m at a loss of where to go next.

As of Right now, I can connect to PSN, download games, update the console, play lighter online games (Fat Princess is semi-stable but I do get booted quite a bit) But if I try to connect to say Uncharted 2’s multiplayer, it tries for 10 mins and fails.

I’d also like to point out that I haven’t had any other problems with any other device on the network, this being the computers, Wii, and Xbox 360 (both of which nave no problems playing games online.) I just checked my bandwidth it’s 6260 kbps download, and 50 kbps upload.

I’m at my wits end with all this… Fluther HELP!

Haha, I picked one up just for testing purposes, I NEVER expected to keep it.

Did you try calling Sony?
too bad you can’t buy applecare for a ps3

I haven’t tried that as I am still not sure if it’s the PS3’s fault, (If 2 systems several generations apart act the same way)
oh and if it helps I have a 40gb model (the MGS 4 gunmetal edition)

yeah. it’s the PS3’s fault.

I would like to think that it’s the PS3’s fault (that problem would be easily fixed), but as I mentioned earlier it has the same problem on 2 PS3s. As this is not a problem on any of my friends PS3s I would have to assume that it’s a problem with the PS3 communicating through my network. My next step will be to take this PS3 and bring it over to someone else’s house and test it there.

or bring someone else’s PS3 to your network and test it

Could be that your ISP is throttling traffic for the Playstation Network. If I was you I would try your Playstation at another persons house first. Preferably one with a different ISP.

@johnpowell awesome I’ll try that today.

ok… so I have done more tests. My neighbor has Embarq so I tried it at her house… the ps3 connected beautifully and with no hang ups.

So I took the router from her house and connected it to my modem. It had the same problem it’s always had.

I’m pretty sure that it’s something with my ISP. I’m going to give them a call and try to switch out my modem. If that doesn’t work, I guess it’s time for a house call. I’ll keep updating so if anyone else has this same problem they can be pointed in the right direction.

Bright House said I’ve been having signal problems and they are sending a technician to come by on Wednesday to check it out.

Just to tie up this question… Brighthouse replaced my cable modem and all is super fast and well!
