What's the best place to get a record of a marriage that took place in the 1940s in Manhattan?

I need to get my parents’ marriage record so that we can apply for Veteran’s benefits for my mother. Before I do a lot of phoning and Googling, I was wondering if anyone else has done this kind of search and can point me to the best websites?

Ancestry.com has all that stuff in one place, but you have to pay a fee.
