Can you accept a health care reform legislation that bans abortion care?

Asked by airowDee (1791points) November 9th, 2009

Accordinig to the Stupak amendement passed by the U.S Congress, the health care reform bill in its current form will ban any federal money covering insurance for abortion. Specifically, this means that both public and private plan purchased with federal subsidy cannot cover abortion services. What do you think ? Should this bill go forwards in order to appease the opponents for abortion?

Does health care cover abortions now?

The benefits to the many people dieing because they can’t fill prescriptions outweighs the cost to the few who will have to pay out of pocket for abortions. I don’t like it, but if that is the cost I will accept it.

No. This is a step in the wrong direction. I can only see things getting worse from here.

The Stupak/Pitts amendment would restrict women’s access to abortion coverage in the private health insurance market, undermining the ability of women to purchase private health plans that cover abortion, even if they pay for most of the premiums with their own money. This amendment reaches much further than the Hyde Amendment, which has prohibited public funding of abortion in most instances since 1977.

I didn’t know insurance ever covered abortions, so no, I’m not surprised. As far as I know the average abortion costs less than $500. If the Internet is correct, about 75% of the procedures are paid for out of pocket.

I would find it ridiculous if it didn’t cover a medical procedure.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@casheroo Do you know if your insurance covered it before though? I don’t believe mine did. (Ours doesn’t cover a vast number of procedures).

I’m upset that the reform continues to ignore the importance of dental care. Again, it does not shock me that to get some reform passed abortions aren’t covered.

Even in Canada, some provinces do not extend universal health care to dental coverage. For example, in Ontario, we don’t get dental care through the public health care system. It sucks.

@airowDee Does the Canadian plan cover abortions?

I don’t understand it w/dental care at ALL. Heart disease prevention and all

@SpatzieLover My insurance that I had with my parents (until I was 21) did cover abortion. Medically necessary or elective.
I’m not sure if my insurance covers it now. I would think it did. Prior to getting pregnant, I had a specific insurance through the state that covered “family planning” A lot of low income women qualify for family planning aka birth control. So, I’m still with a state program, and I think they would cover it since it’s cheaper than having children in the system.

Whoops! I stand corrected. I just looked it up, and my insurance company generally doesn’t cover it (that’s what the site says, whatever that means) I’m actually shocked. But, abortions really aren’t that expensive. Most clinics go on a sliding scale basis, and let you pay what you can afford, according to income (and they do not ask for income proof) But, to be able to do so they need certain funding.

Yes. Things can be fixed afterward.

Dental insurance is a wonderful luxury that I never had the liberty of having. I’m 18 and still need braces. Boo.

@SpatzieLover

Yes, it does cover abortion. There is no legal restrictions for abortion as far as I know. In some provinces, sex reassignment surgery is covered under public health care too.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Interesting @airowDee. I doubt either will ever be covered under a national plan in the USA during my lifetime.

@casheroo I’m thinking if most people are paying out of pocket and another large percent is paying for them with medicaid coverage, abortion costs can’t be even as high as $500, but I could be wrong.

@airowDee Do any provinces cover dental? In Alberta’s history, depending on who’s premier, some procedures will get the axe and 4 years later will be covered again.

casheroo's avatar

@SpatzieLover Apparently it’s not covered by Medicaid in my state, with the two main insurance carriers of Medicaid that I know of (AmeriChoice and Keystone Mercy) But yeah, all the out of pocket expense probably helps. I wish it worked with dental!

@casheroo Our current dental insurance is so expensive my husband & I decided to only cover the two of us for the year. We’ll decide over the holidays if we need to include our son or not. It’s brutal for us just to cover our health insurance…let alone afford the dental coverage. I literally added up our two cleanings as out-of-pockets for the year and found out the insurance only saved us $20, if we only need the cleanings. My husband’s crown just chipped and he said “screw it”. He refuses to get it fixed under the current plan.

Sure, why not? In fact, I don’t think public money should be used to cover abortion services for your average “I wasn’t smart enough to properly protect myself so now I want an abortion” type of abortion. After all, my monthly supply of condoms isn’t covered, nor is my gfs birth control pills. Take responsibility for yourself, and don’t expect everyone else to fork out the dough when you f*ck up.

(In extreme cases of medical emergency or rape, then obviously insurance should cover these situations. That should go with out saying.)

I can see both sides of this…
@tb1570 if your health plan is like most, viagra is covered , even if birth control pills, condoms and abortions are not.

Affordable health care for most, back alley abortions for all.

Yeah, America!
