What are the origins of Cracker Jack?

Where did the name come from? Are the sailor and the dog significant at all to the brand?

@rangerr Nah, but my manager is absolutely fascinated by “that weird internet thing”, and she wanted to know. I humor her, and I get to use my computer at work. It’s a win-win.
