Are my bad sleeping habits potentially harmful?

Asked by reacting_acid (1181points) November 10th, 2009

During the weekday I don’t get as much sleep as some people think I should. I usually get to sleep at 10— 10:30 pm and I usually wake up at 4 am. People are telling me this is really bad. I don’t really find it all that bad because after a good ten minutes of being awake I feel perfectly fine. I sometimes fall asleep during the day but thats usually when i am really bored and doing nothing of importance. Lately so many people have told me this is a bad thing that I have started to question waking up so early. I really love being up early when it is dark and quiet and no one is around. Please, do you think that this is harmful for me? Advice is severly needed. Thanks for the advice in advance!

If you’re not feeling tired, then you’re fine. Quality of sleep is more important than the length.

I don’t see why not. Aren’t adults supposed to get 6 hours of sleep every night?

Im not exactly an adult. I am only a teenager.

6 hours of sleep isn’t that bad. I usually feel best when I get 6 or 7 hours. Any more than 8 is too much for me and I’m more tired during the day than if I had only gotten 6 or 7. I think you’re okay.

6 hours a night is fine! I think people are just hearing “4am” and freaking out on you, assuming that you go to bed at 1am like everyone else your age. I got about 6 hours a night when I was in high school (although mine was 1am-7am, slightly more social “normal”) and was fine. Now I feel better if I get 7 or 8 hours a night, it’s very annoying. Enjoy it while it lasts! :)

6 hours of sleep a night is not “fine” for a teenager. Teenagers are much like infants in the amount of sleep they need.

You don’t have to give up getting up early. You just have to go to bed sooner if you do get up early. Or get up early on the weekends only as an example, there are a lot of options you can choose.

Your body is the guage you need to use, not what other people say. If you are tired, lethargic, or not as fit as you should be, you aren’t getting enough sleep. If you feel fine with yourself on the amount you get, that is all that counts.

Haha during the week i sleep around 1am and wake up around 6am… I’m never tired but on weekends i sleep a full twelve hours and sometimes even 13 hours a day.

Depends on your age. As you get older your sleep habits should change. Otherwise they are potentially harmful.
