A good way to get a ballpark figure is to look at the address bar and subtract about a hundred from the number that comes after the ”/disc/”

Questions – Test questions = total

Or:
Questions – Flagged and removed questions = total

if you get my drift. My question is.. Do deleted threads stay in the database?

Good question. It’s basically questions – test questions (and other miscellaneous setup stuff from the old days). Deleted discussions (threads) are indeed saved in the database.
