What is that toast-like smell that sometimes emanates from buildings?

I assume it has something to do with the heating system or power plant, but what is it, exactly?

Most likely some one is making toast

Probably the heating system being turned on, and dust getting toasted.

or, they’re burning witches.

That’s the smell of burning (shed) human skin, dust mites and their excrement…the main ingredients in household/domestic dust. Mmmmm…toasty!
