Can I replace my "Ceran" top on my oven?

Asked by scotielee (117points) November 14th, 2009

Stupid me did not realize that the top of the oven that I was sitting on was glass. Needless to say, it was broke. Can I replace just the top of the oven – the glass piece?

it’s a pain in the rear but you can. you might have to order it. is it a ‘jenn-air’? just go to your local a-boy shop or whoever sells those type appliances.

You can but it won’t be cheap. I would just compare the price between the replacement parts and installation compared to the price of buying a new stove. Part of me says that they won’t be that far apart.

One site has a person saying that three years ago the replacement piece cost $300 for their Amana range. They didn’t mention the cost of installation but instead asked for a breakdown of the stove so they could replace it themselves. You should probably seek out the website for the manufacturer of your stove and ask them what the cost would be, or simply call the local appliance repair place that deals with your brand. If you have a whirlpool, this is your answer.

As to the cost of replacing the whole stove, that will vary greatly depending on make, model and size, starting at $349 and quickly rising to $999 and above.

@Darwin thanks for the info. I think we are going to just replace the stove. It just so happens that they wanted a new stove anyway. Still sucks though, I guess I didn’t think the glass top would be free-floating…weird.

Ours (Maytag Gemini) got marked up and we looked into replacing it. It would have been over $500. before installation so we are living with it.

@janbb – I have heard that SoftScrub can clean some marks off and that Barkeeper’s Friend works well, but this site has approved methods of cleaning the stove top, including some marks of long-standing.

Maytag recommends Cerama Bryte Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner (800) 578-HOME; www.ceramabryte.com.

@Darwin We have a good stove top cleaner (it might be that cerama bryte) and also a scraper and can get a lot off, but some marks are just cooked on. I will check out the other sites. thanks!
