If you could create the next popular internet acronym, what would it be and why?

Asked by erichw1504 (26448points) November 16th, 2009

I’m talking about acronyms like: LOL, IMO, LMAO, WTF, BTW, OMG, NIMBY etc…

What should be the next popular one and what does it stand for? Why should it become so popular? Is there a good enough use for it?

Or, do you ban yourself from using them?

Bonus: What is your favorite current internet acronym?

My favorite is:TTFN – Ta ta for now! (Thanks Tigger!)

If I could create one it would likely be “lolimh” Laugh out loud in my head”; I use lol all the time but rarely do I actually laugh out loud >.<

Well… I have always hated LOL. When I first saw it… back in the early 90’s, I refused to say it. I still do… to this day!

What I said back then, was “Heh eh” Kind of typing out the laugh that I would do. That…. over the years git shortened to “heh.”

So now, whenever someone else would say LOL, I say heh.

@mowens Mine would be NRLOL “No Really, I am laughing out loud” As LOL has become a standard reply it has lost its meaning. I feel you have to reiterate actually if someone really makes you laugh.

@bobbidigidal: Our fearless leader, Andrew coined something like that: lol4rl (for real).

My favorite is WTF? Because that phrase is something I often think and say. I think I would use WAUD? For What are you doing? I guess I use sup for that tho.

forestGeek's avatar

@knitfroggy – Yeah that’s a good one. I hate internet acronyms, and that’s the only one I like and use at all.

DBTG- Don’t be That Guy.

I love FTW. Most people read it as “For The Win!” but in my head, it means “Fuck The World!”

You’d be surprised at how interchangeable those two phrases are in context.

BBL (be back later) It would be more accurate than BRB in most cases.

knitfroggy's avatar

@aprilsimnel I lurve AYFS! I am going to start using that. It could nearly be interchangable with WTF.

How about LMALMJLML?

I don’t think Andrew, as clever as he may be, coined LOL4RL. Certainly not on fluther, as I’d used it way before there was a Fluther (fluther is circa ‘07 btw).

But then Al Gore invented the internet so I’m not sure. Maybe he did. I’ll wait for Andrew to confirm or deny.

WTF has been around for ages, but I can’t seem to use it – or read it anymore – without thinking Seeya….... Gary / WTF.

;-)
