Has anyone had luck with binaural audio?

Asked by kgallo (53points) November 19th, 2009

I just learned about binaural audio, and was wondering if anyone has tried it and noticed a marked difference. I’m particularly curious about if it improves focus and memory – especially if it helps with Attention Deficit Disorder.

Also, is there a particular iPhone app that you would recommend for it?

A guy called Woody Norris has. I watched a TED Talk he made a while ago.

Here it is:

It’s really cool

I purchased iPhone apps to test it out a while back. For me the sounds were oddly unsettling and gave me a mild headache despite having the volume low.

I have heard that this is not common but was my experience.

@bvdshec17 Thanks! I started to watch it, but can’t watch the whole thing (as I’m currently procrastinating from doing work) but it does look interesting!

@Dog I’m actually trying one of the apps now, and I’m experiencing the same issue. The sounds don’t bother me in and of themselves, but I’m getting a slight headache). I wasn’t sure if it was related to the binaural or not, so it’s interesting to hear that you got that, too.

I downloaded a marijuana audio file for use on the I-Doze binaural program. Did absolutely nothing for me.

@drdoombot and @uberbatman I wasn’t really thinking of the i-doser program. More of the meditative binaural tracks. Thanks though!

I don’t understand. Listening to what? Binaural is a recording technique with mikes placed close together, to simulate ears. The idea is that listening with headphones will be like sitting in the recording session.

What does that have to do with focus and memory?

@jaytkay: Run a web search for “binaural beats”. They claim to utilize the different audio channels to stimulate the brain’s hemisphere’s and the connection between the two. The one I tried left me feeling unsettled and with a mild headache, as @Dog described. I’ve downloaded some for my iPhone, but don’t have really good stereo headphones yet.
