My body is freaking out. Are these common caffeine withdrawal symptoms?

Asked by spywacko (324points) November 19th, 2009

I recently decided to cut Dr. Pepper out of my daily routine. During the day, I’ve typically consumed around 3–5 cans of the sugary substance.

I started this 5 days ago. I’ve had a few cups of coffee and a little Dr. Pepper, but I’ve been pretty good about staying off. I was an occasional smoker and I also gave that up. I’m also leaving my current job for a new one.

So, with all that said. Is it common to have migraines, shivers/shakes, lightheadedness, and a fever? It comes in waves… usually at night.

Any thoughts or suggestions? They would be appreciated. Thanks.

One month, a few years ago, my dad lived pretty exclusively on Power Bars and Coffee. While that was its own idiotic decision, he then decided to quit cold. He had the same symptoms you describe only more intensely in addition to dry heaving. He was stuck in a fetal position on the floor with a pan for a few days and really thought he was going to die, but he recovered. Considering the level of your consumption, I think it’s a pretty reasonable (while severe) form of withdrawal. If it’s just due to quitting, you should be better within two weeks. Some people are just more sensitive to the substance.

To be safe, I would recommend visiting a physician to rule out some other sickness.

Caffeine is a powerful drug, and quitting it cold turkey can have some fierce withdrawal effects. Night time is the worst because you are trying to calm down enough to go to sleep, and that’s always when things seem the worst. I’d give up caffeine first, and then ciggies, but both at the same time is C-R-A-Z-Y-!

Wow, you’re making a lot of changes! This isn’t just due to the caffeine. I’ve been pretty addicted to coffee and tried to cut it out a few times. The normal symptoms from caffeine withdrawal are a headache, fatigue, and maybe shakes if it’s really bad. Your body is probably also used to the extra sugar from the Dr. Pepper. Part of the problem could be stress from the job, too. It sounds like your body is just trying to adjust to all these changes at once.

Headaches yes. Maybe shivers. Fever no. Sounds like your immune system went down because of the change and therefore you got sick.

Having tried going cold-turkey on caffeine before, I can tell you, it hurts just as bad as you are describing. When I do it, I tend to spend a couple of days just conked out and headachey.

Actually yes.. That’s how I was when I started to calm down on the caffeine and when I finally was down to a soda every two weeks or so. It’s sucky, but it’ll get better :D

The same thing happened to me when I first stopped drinking pepsi. I was crazy about it! I literally only drank pepsi. Nothing else. So when I quit cold turkey I had migraines, sweats, and shakes for the first few days. It’ll pass. Bravo for making such healthy choices in your life :)

Just think of the weight you will loose giving up the DR. I gave up Coke & Dew for Lent last year and during that period I lost 10 lbs. No diet pop either.
I still had my coffee, but had shakes and headaches….Cold turkey gives you withdrawls, and will lower resistance to many things. Give it another week and you’ll be thru it.
Good Luck
