What shouldn't I miss during two days in Amsterdam?

Asked by testtoast99 (80points) November 21st, 2009

I have two full days in Amsterdam and I would love to hear about your favorite restaurants, museums, shops, sights, etc.

I love it here already and am excited to hear from Fluther about all the parts you like the most. Thanks!

If you like art, then the Van Gogh museum is stunning. If you like history, the Anne Frank house is rather stirring. And don’t forget to try a cone of French fries (must not be actually called “French” though) – they have ketchup but spicy peanut sauce is a favorite.

The Rijksmuseum is one of my favorites. Also, take a walk in Vondelpark, especially since it seems to be nice and sunny today. (at least where I live, about 50km from Amsterdam)

Go to a coffee shop. :)

If you are there, I think you should try one of those coffee shops. Even if you have never tried weed before, than just few zips from that, or try a cookie that contains some green stuff. The other well visited area is the red light district. It is very close to the Dam square. Watch out for the drug dealers, never buy anything from them, and don’t let them to follow you for the cash maschine, because they can rip you off easily. Especially at night – watch out for your personal things. Beside these bad things, enjoy Amsterdam, cause it is the best capital I’ve ever seen!

@emma193 Good tip. There’s currently an exhibition at the Van Gogh, “Van Gogh’s Letters,” which have rare showings of the letters that Vincent wrote home to Theo. In the letters he sketches the painting he’s currently working on and, in some cases, the letters themselves are genuine works of art.

I think they’re called “patates’ in Holland. Have a riijstaffel meal at an Indonesian restaurant. Go to the Riijksmuseum to see Rembrandt’s Night Watch and self-portraits.

It’s been a long time but when I was there, you could get a “contact high” from hanging out in any of the plazas.

Its INNOVATION in the dam this weekend, as in the best rave of all time, its also the cannabis cup awards, you pay a small amount of money to judge the best weed in the world.. amazing. Dont go to the red light district it made me cry. DO try some shrooms…. its crazy.

If you like photography, FOAM (fotographie amsterdam) is a great museum that always has good work.

On “Nieuwmarkt” are a lot of nice cafe’s, with a lot of locals .Especially cafe Fonteyn is nice. And Bern is nice for dinner, cheesfondue, no music, cozy. And near the Nieuwmarkt is the Zeedijk, where a lot of cheap Asian-fusion restaurants are. I also would recommend Schuim, that’s a cafe near Damsquare. Paradiso is an old church, nice for concerts an dancing but don’t go there if you’re only into techno or hip-hop.The OBA, a new library next to the central station is worthwile to check out. A lot of computers also for free internet and nice architecture.

FOAM is a great photography museum. Van Gogh is also nice. Don’t visit, Rijksmuseum, they show a small collection at the moment. Anne Frank is always busy.

Have fun!

Oh, and Stroopwafels! But be careful, they are extremely addictive.

Sorry guys, but a few corrections in this thread:

“Patates” means “potatoes” in many languages but the Dutch use the French language term for french fries: “pommes frites” or more commonly just “frites” (prounounced “freet”)

The most common condiment with fries in the Netherlands is mayonnaise. Try it, you’ll be converted.

The term “french” in “french fries” refers to the method of cooking, not to the country. Which makes the term “freedom fries” not only ridiculous but inaccurate.

@PapaLeo Well, I’m coming to you with all my potato-related questions from now on! Thanks. I did remember the “patates” incorrectly, must have been confusing the name with the Belgium ones, but I sure remember how good they tasted! What is it with the mayonnaise, though? That’s just wrong. :-)

Anne Frank house is a must see. They also have bike tours of the city which I recommend.
