Website to match AC adapters to what they belong to?

Asked by PandoraBoxx (18031points) November 21st, 2009

I have amassed a collection of AC adapters that I have no idea what they belong to anymore. I assume I don’t need them, but it could be that someone in my household isn’t using something because they can’t find the plug.

What’s the best way to figure out what the adapters belong to? Some have clues, like they say “Sony” actually, most of these say “Sony”

What should I do with all of these adapters? Throw them out?

A very good question. I know exactly what you talk about, and I don’t have a good answer to that; I have a box full of them.

If I lose or break a phone, I throw the charger in there as well, and they pile up. You know, I should throw them away, and promise myself to tag future adapters with a stickers or tape, saying what it was for; make and model.

Four clues when matching adapters to devices:

1)
Brand name (may not always match, they may use generic adapters)

2)
Do the connectors physically fit? (obviously, test this with the items unplugged).

2)
Volts and amps (A) or (milliamps (mA))
Should be listed on both the devices and adapter. Match ‘Output’ on the adapter and ‘Input’ on the device.
Here are three examples from adapters in my office:
5.0V 350mA
+12V 1A
16VAC 750ma

3)
Polarity
There may be a little picture showing plus and minus signs.
There are two contacts on the adapter. The tip or inner contact, and the base or outside.
The same picture must be on both adapter and device.

There’s no need for a website. The electronic device the adapter is paired with displays the required amps and voltage. Just do a visual match.

Whether the plug fits or not, its not an accurate determinant.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic, my problem is, I don’t know what device I’m looking for to match the adaptor to- phone, CD player, camera, swiffer sweeper, handheld dictaphone, cordless telephone, old gameboy- items I may not have anymore, items that belong to either of my daughters or husband that they do or don’t have anymore.

I have 19 AC adaptors that are unmatched to a device, and none of them fit the three things that I know I’m missing an adaptor for.

I have 6 power cords for PC monitors, and I haven’t had a PC for 6 years. Why can’t I bring myself to throw these out?

I am so pleased I found people looking for the same answer. I have had this dilemma for ages and I am dealing with it again right now. I guess the only alternative for this problem is to have an inventory of all our gadgets, everything that needs a cable. At least , this way ,the risk of throwing a cable away by mistake is not so great. It is not hard to do it, and I believe it saves us precious time. I am sorting this problem out little by little and when I finish it, I will be to throw the rest away, FINALLY. Hope it can help others too.
