Why am I sick all the time?

Asked by bright_eyes00 (1343points) November 24th, 2009

it seems like every time i turn around, i’m sick. Like five months ago i had bad tonsilitis and then just shortly after i got so sick they thought i had the flu and i was on quarters (in the military, it means i have to stay in my house for however long the quarters say in order to get over being sick or to recover from something), well about two months later i had a pain so bad in my side that i couldnt breathe right and i was in tears and naseated(sp?) that i had to go to the hospital and the doctors argued about ovarian cysts and appendisitis(sp?) so they did nothing but dope me up and keep me over night. well like two weeks ago i was on quarters again because i woke up at like 3 in the morning and couldnt stop throwing up, i was in crap shape all that day. well today i wake up and i feel like i’m going to throw up and my head is throbbing. I hate this more than anything, i’m tired of being sick all the time, and i’m tired of my doctor not caring (military healthcare, YEAH!!!! insert sarcasm). It just seems like nothing i do works either, like herbal teas or prescribed meds. i’m sick and tired of being sick and tired, i’m also tired of having no clue whats wrong with me, anyone out there in flutherland have any idea what might be wrong with me or what i might be able to do to strengthen my immunity???

Has any doctor looked into the possibility of psychosomatic disorders?

Are you allowed to visit a non-military doctor at your own expense? Maybe that would help.

I was sick all the time until I got my tonsils out.

My daughter was sick all the time until a military doctor had the bright idea of testing for the various components of her immune system. Turns out she was missing two of the four main parts, and so was diagnosed as having a form of Immunoglobulinemia. She was put on prophylactic antibiotics for several years and eventually other parts of her immune system took over so now she stays well most of the time.

The various civilian doctors could never figure it out, and actually accused me of being a bad mother.

Any chance you could get to a military teaching hospital like Wilford Hall at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas? They love to get difficult diagnostic problems. My daughter’s diagnosis was actually made at Fort Sam, also in San Antonio, although the doc and we were located at Corpus Christi NAS.

And are you actually getting to see a military doctor, or one of the contract civilian doctors? Sometimes there is a reason they go for contract work rather than trying to run a private practice. In addition, sometimes the younger doctors are more open-minded as well as more up-to-date. Can you switch PCMs? Or as others suggest, get a referral out in town?

@Darwin I will have to push it harder when i see my PCM. me being sick all the time is affecting my work and personal relationships. it sucks.and the pain is not worth it. was just diagnosed with pneumonia a day ago. i never heard of immunoglobulinemia. i will have to check into that. thanks for the help and i’ll let ya’ll know what happens when i see my military doc (she’s a capt.) on monday

Hope it works out. Certainly the military would be better served if you were healthy, and your doc should realize that. Bear in mind that immunoglobulinemia may very well not be your diagnosis, but the process by which our doc thought to look for it is what you are hoping for. Good luck!
