Is it ok to wear ankle boots if you have curvy calves?

Asked by Haleth (18947points) November 24th, 2009

I don’t usually go for trends, but ankle-high boots are really cute. I have a pair of black buckled ones that I wear with jeans all the time. I’d like to wear them with skirts, but I’m scared that they will make my legs look stumpy. Maybe I could do what this woman is doing, and wear lighter shoes with darker stockings? What do you guys think?

I should think that shapely calves are a lovely thing to have.

By “curvy” do you mean fat or muscular? I guess it doesn’t matter if you’re wearing tights…

Love your idea about stockings, go for it.

@Facade Um… a little of both, I guess? Sort of like this or (edit) this. I’m also short.

Her legs look skinny to me…
Go for it. I would. 5’2 with muscular/out of shape calves ;) You’ll look great

Fashion guru Tim Gunn would suggest that the boots and hosiery be the same color especially for short folks.

It creates the illusion of height due to the longer unbroken line. Different colors give a choppy effect. He just made these comments on a recent Oprah show.

Makes sense to me. I’m also short and I’ve heard similar advice from other fashionistas which also includes the skirt in the color tone.

@Buttonstc Comments like that (Tim, not you) are irritating. Like we all have to aspire to be some type of perfect body type. If someone wants to look taller, then great. But there shouldn’t be a default button.

I’ve always heard that it’s an ankle strap, not ankle boots themselves, that are bad for those of us with “glorious” calves. :P

Dunno…put on the outfit, then look in the mirror. If you’re still not sure, ask a friend or someone whose opinion you trust.

It’s a cute look, but oh, those heels. How do young women manage it without backache and foot pain?

Go for it.

I’m not a member of the fashion police, and for good reason. I believe that whatever you like is what you should wear.

@facade

Being only 5ft 2” tall I’m willing to take advantage of every illusion I can get. As Randy Newman wrote…

:D

But seriously, I understand your point about allowing for all body types. But I’m certainly zaftig enough and I ain’t about to lose any weight just so I can aspire to be like some anorexic, anemic, fashion model all coked up and chain smoking just to maintain that Barbie look.

But if I could just give a teeny bit of an illusion of a miniscule bit of height….

Does that make me a bad person?

@Buttonstc That sounds logical, and easy enough for me because I have plenty of black shoes and black stockings.

If you feel like wearing them, you should. Confidence is the key to pulling off any outfit.

Though, I agree with @Buttonstc… For women with a vertical disadvantage (like me) and are worried about stumpy legs, I highly recommend wearing stockings of the same colour as your shoes because it creates a straight line giving you the illusion you have longer legs. :) That’s why I’m a HUGE fan of nude coloured stilettos!
