Do you think Jesus ever visited Britain?

Asked by RareDenver (13173points) November 26th, 2009

A couple of ground rules for this will have to be laid down here.

1. This is not about whether Jesus is, was or ever was the son of God.
2. This assumes that the historical character of Jesus of Nazareth existed (if this needs discussing lets give it it’s own thread)

There are lots of stories about how Jesus visited Britain, especially the ones around Glastonbury and more specifically the Tor and Abbey. I think most people have taken these as just that, stories. This guy reckons there could be more to these stories.

So what do you think the chances are that Jesus visited Britain?

Not likely.

He very well could of. (not trying to be religious just saying) In the bible it says he walked over the entire world, and britain is part of the world. Right? So I would think that he did..

laureth's avatar

“All over the entire world” could be taken many ways, though. People didn’t know how big the world was, and they certainly didn’t know about two entire continents on the other side. If what he did was walk all over the whole Levant, that could seem like the “Entire World” to someone who never traveled more than a day’s walk from their village.

I personally don’t think there is anything outrageous in the claim that someone from the Middle East visited Britain 2000 or so years ago, in fact I would be more surprised if you someone said no-one from the Middle East visited Britain 2000 years ago, but a carpenters son? Would he have had the resources?

Brenna_o's avatar

@laureth No one will ever know for sure until we die. But thats what i have been told so you never know what His extent of the “whole world” is.

laureth's avatar

@Brenna_o – true… He could have also visited the Native Americans, like the Mormons claim. They may be right, after all!

@RareDenver – I bet plenty of Roman legionaries visited both.

Dr_C's avatar

Well… My name irl is Jesus, and i’ve been to Brittain on various occasions. so.. yes?

Brenna_o's avatar

@laureth As i said when we all die we will see who is right, and who isnt…
Im just believing everything my parents have taught me to believe. Which is The Bible

LKidKyle1985's avatar

I don’t think the romans even started conquering britian until like 40 or 60 AD so I dunno, I don’t think it is likely.

DominicX's avatar

Sounds more like wishful thinking. I think a lot of people like to claim Jesus visited them or was black or was Asian or had blond hair and blue eyes. But think about how long it would’ve taken to walk there and cross the English Channel and everything.

noodle_poodle's avatar

well i suppose it is possible but unlikely…if i was curious which i really am not i’d do some research see what trade there was between places in certain eras record of other having made journeys look up logs..if poss it would give you an idea of the probability of him having done so

Sarcasm's avatar

Of course not. Nobody was on that smelly island 2,000 years ago!
Kidding, Denver, it doesn’t smell that bad.

RareDenver's avatar

@Sarcasm says the guy that only a year ago was asking me about moving to London, you wish you were here!! Or was it two years ago?

RareDenver's avatar

@Sarcasm isn’t it Thanksgiving or something? Shouldn’t you be chillin’ with the family and a giant bird

markyy's avatar

Didn’t he lose his watch somewhere West of London? It’s kind of hard to disprove anything, because well…. he was the son of God. Was it unlikely for him to visit Britain? Sure, but not as much as being conceived without intercourse (or a male spermdonor)..

But even if we can ignore that fact, why England? What would have been the reason for him to visit England and not just go East, South or North? I think it’s rather convenient he would travel in the only direction where people still believe in him.

markyy's avatar

I should add, I have read the article. I am slightly skeptic about the reason for him traveling all that way (just to get some tin). Can we get some info on how rare/scarce/new tin was back then?

lloydbird's avatar

@RareDenver I don’t know. But I know that this chap seems to have a lot to say on the subject. If you’d care to check him out.

dpworkin's avatar

I think the British Channel is a little rough to walk across.

RareDenver's avatar

@pdworkin are you saying there was no such thing as boats 2000 years ago?

dpworkin's avatar

If I were going to have said that I should have used a different form of the verb.

RareDenver's avatar

@pdworkin ????

you confuse me sometimes

dpworkin's avatar

that’s because I am goofing around and you are trying to take it seriously

RareDenver's avatar

@pdworkin waaaaa I wanna go home

hiphiphopflipflapflop's avatar

I think he dissed Britain having foreknowledge of Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

laureth's avatar

@pdworkin puts me in a subjunctive mood.

Val123's avatar

I don’t think he did. Sure, there were explorers and conquerors getting that far in those days, you’re talking about European cultures. Rome, Sweden, etc. Folks from the Middle East were not explorers in that sense, so it wouldn’t be likely that Jesus would have even thought to try and hitch a ride. I don’t know that Jesus, had he even known of Britain, would have had the resources to go. Surely it would have been mentioned in the Bible if he had…

Supacase's avatar

@RareDenver Jesus didn’t need boats.

ratboy's avatar

He was a frequent heckler at Beatles concerts after their popularity exceeded his own.

Jack79's avatar

Jesus never even visited Cyprus, let alone Britain. The distances were enormous, and he would have had to pass many different countries, and spend months travelling from place to place. And we’d be sure to know about it.

Darwin's avatar

Some people believe quite firmly that Jesus spent 17 years in India and Tibet. Since he was just in his thirties when he died I can’t see how he would have time to visit Britain as well as spend that much time in the opposite direction, unless he began traveling before he could walk.

janbb's avatar

Maybe he got a Eurail pass?

dpworkin's avatar

@janbb What are you, a stoont?

janbb's avatar

Hey, if you can be one, I can be one. I’m younger than you.

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon England’s mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England’s pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England’s green & pleasant Land.

While I love singing Jerusalem, I don’t believe a historical Jesus would have ever visited the British Isles.

mattbrowne's avatar

Very low. Even the apostles didn’t get that far north.

Darwin's avatar

Would England really want Jerusalem in its green and pleasant land? Seems to me that there is already enough strife without bringing in more.
