Can a tumor come back?

Asked by icehky06 (896points) November 26th, 2009

When I was born I had a huge tumor on my arm, my mom never told me if it was cancerous but she did say she did nothing to get rid of it. My skin is all ripped up from having it ..I look like a creature with it. Could it still be living there? Should I be concerned?

I would have a dermatoligist look at it periodically, but unless you notice a change you should be OK. Why don’t you ask your mom if it was cancer? Do you feel like you look loke a creatue with the scar or before it was removed? How old are you now?

Ask your doctor about it.

Why in the world wouldn’t you ask your mother?

I’m assuming your mother is out of the picture, ask your doctor about it. You may also consider asking your father or any other relatives that would have been around when you were born and would have been close to your mom and you.

Worst case if no one knows, you may be able to get your medical records. But chances are if as a kid nothing was done it was probably benign.

If it was a benign lump, then you don’t need to worry.

But this is such a crucial piece of informatio , if it were me, I would want to know for sure and I would move heaven and earth to find out.

What Asmonet said is most likely correct as there would most likely have been either radiation treatments or chemotherapy after the surged to be certain that any stray cells were also eliminated IF it were cancer.

But, if it were me I would still want to know. That’s just the way I am.

If you are legally an adult you should talk to a doctor about it, to see if it needs to be removed because of a potential for growth or dissemination, or also if it can be removed and the area made to be more cosmetically pleasing. Without a diagnosis, there is no way to know if the thing has the potential to come back or not, or whether is has implications beyond how it looks.

If you are a minor, then you would need to convince your parents that you need that information and really want to see if something should or can be done.
