not exactly, Poser.

@Poser; not bad, tho. May I assume that you are – you should forgive the expression – a goy?

Gail, you must be kvelling.

@gailcalled—Does the fact that I had to look it up answer your question?

Hahaha, as a Jew who group up surrounded with yiddishkeit, this is hilarious.

Yiddish was the language of secrets in my family. If my elders didn’t want me to understand, they spoke Yiddish. A perfect way for a little girl to learn a language-forbidden fruit.

I am getting a lot of naches from this, Kinderlech. (So, how many miles have we written :-0)

@Poser; would you like to become an honorary MOT (member of the tribe)?

Oh yes, Gail, in my family too! The elders started with the spelling-it-out strategy parents often use, but that only worked until I was about two years old because by then my brother was four already and could spell all the words out and would then tell me. A year later and I could spell them myself too.
That’s when they moved on to Yiddish. So, of course, my brother and I were forced to learn parts of the language, :P.

I just know some of the key phrases. My grandparents are survivors, so I get bits and pieces from them and my parents who grew up with it.

PS- Gail, I think you meant “So, how many miles have we written, nu?”

Poser's avatar

Sounds good!

gailcalled's avatar

@ezra, or to be elegant, “So, nu, how many miles have we written?”(Has anyone figured out what this question means, BTW?)

Perhaps we shouldve flagged this question as dumb, but I’m really glad the [unrelated] yiddish conversation was sparked.

It may just be me, but I for one am happy to see a totally pointless and unanswerable question transform into thread of unrelatedness.
