Asked by jca (36062points) November 28th, 2009

i just bought a new wallet and a new pocketbook, both are colored leather (purple pocketbook, wine colored wallet). i am wondering if i should treat both with leather conditioner before putting stuff in them.

do you pre-treat your leather acccessories such as the above? or just use as-is?

The pocketbook yes, the wallet no. I pre treat almost all of my leather but a wallet has little chance of becoming soiled by water or dirt (unless you are the sort who drops things a lot!). The pocketbook could get wet in the rain.

All of them, always. It’s worth it.

Yes, as well as leather jackets and boots.

Yes. It’s good for them.

I definitely pre-treat all of my leather. Although, saying that, alot of leather sold nower days comes pretreated, so sometimes it is indeed worth checking the labels. Could be a pleasant surprise :-)

The only leather I own is my saddle and the rest of my horse tack.
I pre-treated that, and condition it every so often. It’s cleaned with leather cleaner once a week.
But that’s not an accessory really, so I don’t know if I even answered the question.

i should have added to my question: is the treatment you use the rub-in kind, or the spray-on, waterproofing kind.

chyna's avatar

I use the spray on waterproofing kind.

Yes, definitely, with regular applications over the life of the object. Spray waterproofing for shoes and boots, and rub on for clothes, wallets and purses.
