If you were stuck outside on a freezing night, would you burn your masterpiece to keep warm?

Asked by LC_Beta (1883points) November 29th, 2009 from iPhone

Inspired by a great question from @FireMadeFlesh. If you were stuck in dangerously cold conditions with no way to keep warm other than by burning the only copy of something you had written or created that you considered your masterpiece, would you do it?

Hell no. Assuming the masterpiece survives the cold (we talking hard copy, flash drive?) it’s going to be around a lot longer than I will even if I were to live. That’s how good my masterpiece would be~

It would be my only shot at immortality, yadig?

Yes. Not that I could ever create an enduring piece of work anyway.

@holden

But you wrote that one story about yourself, remember? It’s been around a while.

This is one of the few elements of christianity that I practice religiously, jesus saves and so do I!!! So I am certain that I would have a copy on my laptop, probably uploaded to a safe drop box and most likely a cd or 2 plus a flash drive just to be sure.

So heck yes, I would burn it and revel in the warmth!

Yes. It seems like a silly premise but I would “BURN MOTHERFUCKER BURN!!”

it depends what i had made. and just how important i considered it. if it was just a fantasy, a novel of some kind i would burn it. however if it was something that had the potential to change the world, i would not destroy it just for 20 minutes or so more warmth.

No… I’d sell it an buy a big fuckoff mansion!

No, I can’t imagine the little bit of warmth from burning it would do much. I’d do jumping jacks and whatever other exercises would warm me up.

Either that or build a rough igloo. Snow has remarkable insulating potential. Works for the Eskimos. You don’t see them hanging around burning their masterpieces, do you now?

I’d get busy with my next masterpiece- a wonderful igloo.

That’s a tougher one for me than the sacred books question. I have a few (very few) paintings I’ve done that I really like and probably couldn’t reproduce. Might have to burn myself to keep them warm!

Since the only masterpieces I’ve created are living breathing little boys all together now: “awwwww”, this is purely academic, but I’m pretty certain I would burn it.

gggritso's avatar

@SuperMouse My initial reaction was “OH MY GOD, SHE HAS CREATED HUMANS?” but then I thought “Oh, that makes perfect sense actually.”

I would be smart enough to have more than one copy, so yes.

Yes, easily.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

Yes. It would be foolish not to. Just create another masterpiece.. preferablly with plenty of pages to burn for the next time your retarded ass gets stuck in the middle of the snow with only your masterpiece.

Siren's avatar

Oh yes. My life is worth more and I can make another masterpiece (hopefully!).

I’m with @poisonedantidote on this one… it depends entirely on how important a “masterpiece” it is. Or, more accurately, who is it important to. Just me? I’m burning that sucker. The world as a whole? I’d sacrifice myself for the greater good. I think.

I’ve taken survival training. There is always ways to start a fire and things to burn. I’m hanging on to the masterpiece.
