How deep should I plant my summer squash?

I have a small garden in Northern Vermont, and my summer squash have never grown well. What should I do?

Are you planting from seed or starter plants?

Move further south. Growing season might be too short. We could never get fresh corn or tomatoes in Lake Placid, elevation 2000’.

Yes, this is copied directly from the example, but the best part is, one of the tags is Los Angeles, and the question is about growing summer squash in Vermont. [It should also be noted that it is February and Vermont is completely covered in snow right now.]
