Why is my Garbage disposal leaking water from the bottom?

Asked by sccrowell (3508points) November 29th, 2009 from iPhone

When I run water through the disposal side, it starts leaking where the wires are going (in/out?) of the bottom! Does it need to be replaced? Fixed? Help!!! I am good at fixing things, better at replacing them though! Would you help me?
I really REALLY need to do my dishes!!!

Replace it.

The seal is leaking, and most cases it is just not worth the cost and work, quicker and cheaper to replace it .

@DrBill , Thank you!
Any suggestions on replacement disposals? What should I look for? One better than another? Hope you don’t mind all the questions!

Here is a useful website for folks dealing with disposals. I know my parents have always gone with In Sink Erator, while I have generally had a Sears Kenmore disposer, both of which have been fine. One thing I suggest is to get a slightly more powerful disposer than you think you need, so it will cope with what you put down it.

I must say, though, that I have stopped using our disposer entirely. Chunks that used to go down it now go to the trash, the dogs, or the compost heap, depending on of what they are composed.

I just replaced my disposal as part of a general upgrade of all plumbing having to do with the kitchen sink. I would agree with @darwin and go with a slightly more powerful model.

If you are doing the replacement yourself, make sure the new one is compatible with the existing drain flange, which can be a major pain to replace. Also, check to see if your present disposal is hard-wired into the switch, or if it’s a plug-in model.

Thank you so much for your answers! It did end up being the seal and the water ended up inside the electrical wires. I purchased a esinkerator excel I think it’s called and WTF called a plumber for the installation, so all is well!!! Yeaaaaa…..

Well, then, I guess the plumber knows! That takes care of all the variables I talked about, especially the flange and the wiring. I know what water can do to all that stuff under the sink!
