Kids are getting a Wii for xmas can you recommend some fun family games for ages 6, 8, & 10 for me to check out?

Asked by madsmom1030 (1033points) December 1st, 2009

I am looking for games that will get the whole family involved and also ones that will fit their age groups. The 6yr old and 8yr old are girls and the 10yr old is a boy. Games that mom and dad can participate in also.

I’ve heard great things about Lego Star Wars (from 6 – 40+)

Wii Play is an excellent deal for the money. It has 9 mini-games on the disc, and comes with an extra remote (which costs $35 on its own, so the game is really only $10 if you think of it like that).

The games on the disc are really easy to pick up. My only beef is that only two people can play at a time, but the games are really short, so it is fun to play with a big group and keep switching off.

Wii Sports Resorts. Played that at my girlfriend’s house a few weeks ago and it was a lot of fun for everyone. Got you off the couch and laughing. Like @Sonnerr said, Mario Brothers looks awesome and I am really excited to play that one when I get the chance.

Rayman Raving Rabbids II and TV Party are a hoot-the kids love it and the humor is just slapstick enough. Gets a lot of mileage at our family get togethers.

Also get a gamefly subscription-it’s the easy way to try games out (preview them) and then buy them (keep them) if you like them. It’s basically like NetFlix for video games.

Wario Ware is a lot of incredibly random fun, but make sure you have a lot of space where you play.

Mario Party 8 is a lot of fun.

Dance Dance Revolution is amazing (but only if you are physically able to move your feet quickly). If you get it, you’ll need a $20 dance pad controller.

Like @AstroChuck said, Mario Party is great and it’s fairly easy for younger kids.
I’ve gotten horribly beaten at Mario Kart by a 4 year old as well.

Boom Blocks is unbelievably fun. It is like Jenga but way way more. Little kids can play it. It is way complex for adults if they want it. Multi player up to four (maybe more not sure). I was a complete skeptic and got completely hooked. We had ages 3 7 22 and 40 playing it. VERY fun!!!

Mario Kart is a definite. I got Mario Kart 64 when it came out and I still play it with my friends. I’m 16.

Another vote for Mario Kart, it is really a lot of fun. My boys also love Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones, and Super Mario Brawl. My 9 and 10 year-old’s like Guitar Hero as well. My kids (and their mom) enjoy the snowboarding game (is it SSX Tricky?) and Need for Speed – Underground. The Zelda games are fun too, but might be best for the oldest.

Here is a tip, if it is related to a movie (Shrek, Bee Movie, Cars, etc.), don’t bother with it, in my experience those games are rarely any good.

My 8 year old’s five favorite Wii games:

Super Mario Galaxy
Lego Batman
Lego Indiana Jones
Wii Play
Animal Crossing City Folk

These could all be enjoyed by all 3 kids.
