Why did my computer screen slowly turn white?

Asked by naivete (2463points) December 1st, 2009

I was on a shopping website and my computer screen slowly started turning white. It was not fast and no notice came up. I tried pressing Esc and Ctrl Alt Delete but it didn’t work. I had to re-start my computer. What happened?

Could it be a virus? I thought of this instantly when you said you were on a shopping web site. Has your computer been working otherwise lately? I’ve been hearing alot about “Be careful while shopping online!!” lately. Did you type the website in (or click on a favorites button or something like that), or did you click on a link in an email? It could have been a fake site. Hope this helps.

@ChocolateReigns I wasnt necessarily shopping, I was browsing. However, I understand how this could lead to you thinking I may have a virus. Nothing unusual has been happening, although it would be helpful to know what the signs of a virus are.

Thanks!

What kind of monitor do you have, LCD or an old CRT? If it’s a CRT, you may have a problem in the circuit that controls the display, specifically, the horizontal output transistor. CRTs are boat anchors now, so just ditch the monitor.

If you have an LCD, the problem is most likely your video card.
