What do you do with an ungiven gift?

Asked by iRemy_y (550points) December 3rd, 2009

If you buy an expensive gift for your girlfriend, then you two break up before you give it to her, what should you do with the gift? It’s one of those gifts that would only make sense to give to that person, so you can’t give it to someone else.

Depends on the reason for the breakup. If you are still friends and can’t return it, just give it to her.

Donate it somewhere or sell it on Craiglist?
I would have suggested re-gifting but you said that is out of the picture.

What is it?

Return it. Barring that sell it on eBay or Craigslist.

pawn it =p? depending on your relationship with the ex in question i suppose you could still give it to them as a gift if your “staying friends”, unless its a romantic thing.

I agree with @missingbite. :)

What is it so we can get a clearer picture?

Its a silver necklace i had engraved… i can’t return it. No were not friends anymore, it was a harsh breakup. But pawning it might work. I just don’t know were i can.

@iRemy_y yeah seems like pawning is the way to go. pawns shops arnt that hard to find. your bound to have one unless your living on ranch. dont forget to haggle =D

I still think eBay. What did you have engraved in it?

If it’s her name, and it’s not a common one, I’d sell it for the silver. I’m sure you won’t get much, but some is better than none!

Can you separate the engraved part from the chain? Or just post it on Craigslist as is?

I would not be so gauche as to suggest selling it to her new boyfriend. But there might be other young ladies out there with the same name.

Depending on how deep the engraving is, it could be removed by a jeweler and then sold on ebay.
