How do you eat flax seeds?

Asked by 6rant6 (13700points) December 5th, 2009

I’ve read about flax seeds being a good source of omega 3s. How do people consume them?

I don’t really like them, personally, so I use flax seed oil in recipes.

Ground flax seeds can be added to pretty much anything. If you add them to cereal, smoothies, yogurt, etc., you can’t really taste them.

Grinding them is important, if you want to extract nutrition from them. Unground, they just… pass right through, if you know what I mean.

If it’s too much work to buy flax seeds and add them to things you’re making yourself, just buy food with flax seeds or flax oil already in it. I bought this flax seed granola that is absolutely delicious.

Products containing flaxseed oil probably aren’t as healthy as eating the stuff straight up, though, as it oxidizes quickly when exposed to air, and loses its beneficial properties when heated. Things like bread and granola made with it are probably still healthy to eat, but not because of the flax in it. (This is assuming you want the properties of the oil, and not just the fiber.)

I keep flax meal in the freezer. I use it in basic muffin recipes and other baked goods.

I like Nature’s Path Flax Plus Multi-Grain cereal and also the toaster waffles (in the freezer section).

Flax oil can be used on vegetables instead of butter or olive oil.

@laureth For some reason, I’m not allowed to have flax seed oil (as a pregnant woman) I’m not sure why the seeds are okay, but not the oil.

@pdworkin : I cracked up at ”...Christmas lights…”

laureth's avatar

I’m not sure why either, except that I know that oils are a concentrated form of whatever’s in the original seed. My husband used to be on Coumadin, so olive oil was a concern (too much vitamin K negates the effect of Coumadin), but there were no such problems with eating olives.

Hmm. Top two Google hits for “Flax Oil Pregnancy”—

Nutrition and Prenatal Health – Why Flax Oil Makes Sense During Pregnancy.

Flaxseed oil should not be taken by pregnant women.

The second link says, and I quote, “The reason is that flax seed, like soy or even more so, seems to have an effect on estrogen and hormones and might interfere with your body during pregnancy.”

I know the supplement people hate this idea, but I wish the FDA would get involved in all these health and safety issues.(Don’t mean to start an argument. Just one guy’s opinion .)

marinelife's avatar

@pdworkin No responsible user of herbs and supplements would disagree-only the moneymakers. It would save me a ton of work if there were controlled studies.

dpworkin's avatar

thanks. it’s nice to be backed up by someone who knows what she’s talking about.

casheroo's avatar

@pdworkin I do not exactly like the FDA, but I do wish it were regulated. I’d feel a little safer. I take the supplement I take only for the fiber, which I find to be a better alternative to something like Metamucil (gag!) I found such contradictory information about continuing my fiber while pregnant, and even my OB said “Eh, I think it’ll be fine” That’s not exactly what you want to hear.

dpworkin's avatar

I hear you. It’s hard to like the FDA, but it’s better than utter chaos.
