How do I fix this 'open with...' annoyance on my mac (see details)

Asked by yannick (985points) December 5th, 2009

A while ago, I installed both VMWare Fusion and Parallels to try them out. After later deciding I no longer wanted either on my computer, I uninstalled both.

However, everytime I right click on a file and go to ‘Open With…’, I am presented with all options, as well as the app with ’(Mac)—Boot Camp Partition (2.0)’ at the end [see screenshot]

How do I make this go away?!

I’m not positive this is caused by VMWare Fusion or Parallels, but I’m pretty sure…

Holy shit.. That would drive me insane.

Could you try seeing if it happens with a new user account? If it doesn’t I think I might know of a fix.

I’ve got a similar problem, so I’m very curious if someone can give a solution. I can’t seem to change “Opens with” to a different option. Even though I check the “Always Open With” option, it never takes.

@johnpowell Just made a new account to check and no, it only seems to do it on mine.

Could it be some of the pref files left behind by the apps, i.e. delete all remnants of the apps from the library or use appzapp?

@PapaLeo: That only changes the default for the single file at hand; if you want to change the default for all files of a given type (i.e., having the same extension), select one and click “get info” in the menu, then choose your “open with” app in the sidebar and click the “change all…” button.

@ratboy – thank you, that is fantastic. It was always so annoying that any jpg modified in photoshop wanted to open in photoshop forever after. So if ps was not open, then would have to wait until it did to see the pic. Anyhow your solution works perfectly.

Thank you!

@ratboy You’re the greatest, thanks!! Since switching to Mac about a half year ago, that’s been my only problem. My ONLY problem!!! Now, compare that to working every DAY on a PC for 15 years!!! Why didn’t I switch sooner?!!
