Was your first concert your best concert?

Asked by jamielynn2328 (4737points) December 6th, 2009

What was the first concert you ever went to? Was it the best concert you’ve ever been to?

Do concerts end up being great because of the music or because of the experience? Some of my greatest concerts had nothing to do with the music, but more about the friends and activities and road trips.

I went to my first concert earlier this year, I went to see Coldplay while in Melbourne. I’m not like the greatest fan of Coldplay, I know barely any of their songs, but it was a great night out. Not sure if I would do it again. But I found the whole concert experience something you must do atleast once in your lifetime!

@Sheriff_fan welcome to Fluther. Lurve.
My first concert was Elvis in Las Vegas.
My favorite was Elton in Berkeley.

Good grief, no. And it’s way too embarrassing to say who it was.

My first concert was Sesame Street live. Apparently I had a blast.

My first concert I remember was Hanson. Front row, floor seats. I was in heaven.

I’ve been to entirely too many concerts to actually think of my favorite, but the two that stand out in my mind are:
The Cure: My junior year of high school. Skipped school and spent all day with my now-ex then went to the concert. Met Robert Smith almost passed out and they did a 3 hour encore. It was pretty much heaven.

Warped Tour 2006 I think this was the year: Hellogoodbye, The Pink Spiders, The Early November all played back to back on the same stage. I was standing in the middle against the barrier for each band, who at the time were my top 3. I got 3 guitar picks, a drum stick, a hug, sunglasses and two high-fives from the bands. Then I ended that day with an hour of crowd surfing during NOFX.

Some of the concerts like Beck were amazing because of the music.
Some of them like Relient K were amazing because of the music and the experience.
My top two were because of experience.

First and favourite would be Radiohead
On separate occasions, though

My first concert was Siouxsie and the Banshees in like ‘91 or ‘92. It was a great show, but not my best one, as I only really knew one song.

The best show I ever went to was L7, I think it was ‘97 or ‘98? The venue was small, I knew the songs, and I got right up against the stage. Touched the band’s boots, handled one of their guitars when they tossed it into the crowd, and the energy was amazing!

Many years ago I saw a punk band at a smallish venue in the city where I grew up. I remember feeling drunk, yet I hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol. I was also a little terrified as I had somehow found myself alone (my friend had to leave early into the gig) right at the front, being pushed in to the barricades by the few hundred people behind me. I didn’t know anything about the band at this concert, certainly none of the songs but after leaving the venue I can still remember how exhilarated I felt and how bright and alive everything seemed to me then.

I have never recaptured that feeling but still love a good concert when I have the chance.

@rangerr Hanson? Really?

galileogirl's avatar

Your first is never your best. You need experience to really appreciate the event.

I lost my Gig-Virginity to the Lost Prophets.

It was amazing! The best gig I have ever been to easily. I was terrified, felt like I was going to faint, had a black eye from some idiot infront of me that had a lack of limb-awareness.

I loved it and only wish I could go back.

My first concert was Jimmy Buffett.

The best concert was Roger Waters on his “Dark Side of the Moon” tour.

@avvooooooo I was in like, second grade.

@rangerr :: You should still be publicly shamed. Sorry, that is how the Internet works.

I lived in San Francisco at the end of the 1960s and used to go to a lot of concerts at the Filmore (which is why I can’t hear high-frequency sounds, right @hearcat)? I couldn’t possibly pick one. It was a privilege to have been around for Janice and Jimmy and all the rest.

rangerr's avatar

@johnpowell I’m not ashamed of it. I loved Hanson.

Lupe Fiasco. And it was on my birthday. How amazing? It was the most hype concert i’ve been to. He’s also an amazing hip-hop artist. Though it was cold outside, and somewhat overly hot inside the house of blues, it was still a great experience.

George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers, Perkins Palace in Pasadena, December 11, 1981.

M. Me thinketh not. It was the Osmond Brothers. Didn’t quite compare to KISS and Blue Oyster cult a few years later!

jamielynn2328's avatar

My first concert was Boston. It was very lame and did not even compare to other concert events that I had. I really enjoyed seeing Aerosmith and Sheryl Crow. They are probably top on my list for music, but the concert that I’ll always remember the most would be Moxy Fruvous. I was young and we had a little too much to drink. I laughed so hard in line that I actually peed my pants and since we had drove a long way for the concert, I sat in the car wrapped in a blanket while my friends enjoyed the show. I guess that would be the most memorable Non-Concert Concert moment for me.

marinelife's avatar

No. It was very good, but my favorite concert was a Led Zeppelin concert.

@filmfann:Thanks! sorry, kinda late on that one lol

My very first concert was at the Glasgow Apollo in late 1981 and it was to see Cliff Richard as part of the Wired for Sound tour. He was AMAZING live. I’ve been to a fair few since then but that one is still up there with the best of them. A wonderful memory too :-)
hugs all xx

First: Depeche Mode at the Rose Bowl in 1988.

Best: Way too many to choose from. I recently saw Depeche Mose at the Hollywood Bowl. They were still fab.

@Marina Led Zep…I missed that one… :(

My First Concert: Eddie Kendricks, 1st solo tour, Milwaukee Performing Arts Center; September, 1973 (I was 4 years old)

My Best Concert: R.E.M., Green Tour, Rosemont Horizon, Chicago, IL , 6 March 1989 (I was 19 years old. The father of my friend who came with me was friends with the manager of the venue, so when he saw her at the concessions stand, he put both us in the front row and we got backstage to meet the band after.)

TitsMcGhee's avatar

Certainly not. I saw the Kingston Trio with my dad quite a few times, but my first few concerts where I was flying solo or with friends were Switchfoot, Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, and Cake. Cake was great, the others, while I was excited at the time, weren’t all that great in retrospect.

The best I’ve seen have been The Mountain Goats, The Rolling Stones, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth, the Barenaked Ladies, Bloc Party, and Kimya Dawson.

MrBr00ks's avatar

My first concert: Dizzie Gillespie. I was at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, AK when I was 4.

My favorite: U2 with my bro at the Kingdome in Seattle, WA during their Popmart tour in January of ‘98. They had Smashmouth opening who are horrible live.

aprilsimnel's avatar

@TitsMcGhee – I’ve seen Kimya Dawson; she’s great! She was on a bill with Ex-Models and Erase Errata.

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@aprilsimnel: She was sooooo great. She was on the bill with Shellshag and This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, which was definitely an unexpected grouping, but quite great.

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

Definitely not. My first was a small Christian band called the Paul Coleman Trio, and although a first concert blows your ears off, it was far from the best. Since then I have seen Toto, Dragonforce, Thrice, The Butterfly Effect, and been to the Soundwave Music Festival where As I Lay Dying, the Offspring, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and Saosin played. On Saturday I saw Pain of Salvation and Dream Theatre. The first was definitely not the best. So far Toto was the best, followed by Dream Theatre.

Irishmar's avatar

It wasn’t my very first, but the one I remember most, 1969, Led Zep, Jethro Tull, and Savoy Brown and local Chicago band Litter at the Kenetic Playground. It was very trippy and sooooooo good. TWO SETS.
