Is there a way to keep iChat and Adium from logging me out when my computer sleeps?

Asked by Allie (17541points) December 7th, 2009

When I’m logged into Adium or iChat and the computer is in use everything is fine. When I wander away or go to get something to eat and the computer isn’t being used, my computer goes to sleep after about 10 of 15 minutes. Now, when my computer goes to sleep, I automatically get logged out of Adium or iChat and all my conversations are ended. Is there a way to stop this from happening so that when I wake my computer up it’s as if nothing has changed?
If you need to know, I’m using a MacBook Pro.
I’d rather not never put it to sleep because I don’t want to ruin my battery in any way.

I’m looking it up a bit, but I believe that when your computer “sleeps” the internet connection isn’t connected any longer, so I’m not sure there’s a way to get past that. However I will dig a little deeper to see if I can find anything.

Wait, like this? I think it’s System Preferences > Energy Saver.

I don’t really think there is another way but I’ll search for you.

I appreciate the help.

@TheCreative Yeah, I’d like to not suck the life from my battery though. YaknowwhatImean? And if it comes down to that, I can just set ti to never sleep the computer right? Or do I have to “never sleep the display” too?

Can you leave your computer plugged in and have the battery out? I’m not sure if that would work with macs, but that’s what I do. Take the battery out and it still runs on the power cord.

@chelseababyy Macs have different settings for power adapter and battery. I’m assuming that if I’m plugged in, it will default to the power adapter setting.

So for now, I have the power adapter setting to “computer never sleeps,” but I still have it set to “display sleeps after 15 mins.” If there’s no way around the original issue, then I’ll just plug the computer in when I wander off and it’ll use the settings for power adapter.

@Allie Oh okay. When the display goes to sleep it is still connected to the internet it’s just when the computer goes to sleep it disconnects.

@TheCreative Alright, so I try the “computer never sleeps” setting. I’ll be back if that doesn’t solve things.

Sorry, really late response, but have you tried Caffeine combined with just dimming the backlight all the way? It’s a little app that just sits in the menubar and stops your computer from going to sleep. It doesn’t use much power at all, and is essentially the same thing as putting the computer to sleep.
