Do You Quote Movies And TV Shows In Everyday Conversation?

Asked by gemiwing (14718points) December 8th, 2009

Do you use quotes from movies and tv shows in daily conversations?

How often to you do it? What quotes do you use most? Do you find that you do it more around certain groups of people, or does it not matter?

I quote movies and tv shows all the time. It’s almost like an Autistic tic. If I can use a line from a movie to describe something I’m feeling then I’ll use that instead of finding my own words.

I thought I’d poll The Fluther to see if anyone else did this.

Not that I know of. And if I do, then I do not realise I do.

ALL THE TIME. (Nothing to lose, great movie)

My facebook status right now is:

“Sorry Knox, these two slipped on a banana peal.” (Batman, 1989)

flameboi's avatar

oh yes, more than quoting, I can reference any normal situation with a simpsons episode…

erichw1504's avatar

I know someone who does. Almost every other sentence is a quote from a movie or TV show.

I actually wish I did more, I can never remember any good lines.

Gokey's avatar

“The Dude abides.”

I remember after Napolean Dynamite came out. Everyone and their dog were quoting that film.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Yea, but i tend to quote songs a lot more often.

syz's avatar

Yep. Not every day, but fairly commonly. Usually from Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Airplane, and lots of old, classic cartoons (Looney tunes, mostly). So sue me, I’m a weirdo.

janbb's avatar

Books, songs and the Rocky and Bullwinkle show mainly.

CMaz's avatar

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

My partner and I quote Friends all the time…we quote stuff from regretsy.com all the time as well…

El_Cadejo's avatar

I am instantly mad everytime i hear someone quote Napolean Dynamite or Borat.

breedmitch's avatar

“That’s what she said”

aprilsimnel's avatar

Not every single day, but I’m positive I’m quoting some Python sketch or other on a regular basis.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

oh and we quote Dr. Horrible all the time

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

I quote Futurama all the time.

“Well, thanks to the Internet, I’m now bored with sex.”

jenandcolin's avatar

Oh yeah. I quote “Twin Peaks” at least once a day…
For example…whenever someone is talking about a chihuahua I have this impulse to say “Coop, you remind me today of a small Mexican chiwowwow”. Or when I see someone with styrofoam I have to say: “Styrofoam never dies for as long as you live…It doesn’t?”.
Usually people have no idea what I am talking about and think I am crazy (which makes it even more fun for me).

My man and I quote Family Guy. We think it’s hilarious lol

erichw1504's avatar

I actually like to quote and/or sing the songs of commercials.

stratman37's avatar

MrBr00ks's avatar

every once in a while when someone farts around me, I do my best “Whoa, did somebody step on a duck?” Heh.

I miss Rodney…

I quote the Simpsons a lot. I also use a quote I thought was just something my dad always said when I was a kid, but then learned was from The Magnificent Seven: “It seemed to be a good idea at the time.”

MacBean's avatar

So much that sometimes I don’t even realize I’m doing it and get confused when others get confused. XD

Austinlad's avatar

I’m a huge movie fan and remember whole scenes. I quote movies a lot. One of my oft-used phrases from a Woody Allen movie is “what I wouldn’t give for a large sock filled with horse manure.

evil2's avatar

whenever i can work it in….....helllo mc fly….

ekans's avatar

I do this over 9000 times a day.
I only quote meme-worthy lines.

MacBean's avatar

You must talk a lot, @ekans.

boffin's avatar

Mongo only pawn in game of life….

aprilsimnel's avatar

@boffin, I so want to quote Gene Wilder from that movie; “What did you expect? “Welcome, sonny”? “Make yourself at home”? “Marry my daughter”? You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons.”

Darwin's avatar

I’m with @syz and @boffin and @aprilsimnel – I quote movies all the time, especially witty ones.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: What a filthy job.
Igor: Could be worse.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: How?
Igor: Could be raining.

Marge Gunderson: I’m not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your police work, there, Lou.

Lili Von Shtupp: they’re always coming and going and going and coming… and always too soon.

Bart: The hard part was inventing the candy-gram.

Sir Alexander Dane: You broke the ship. You broke the bloody ship.

janbb's avatar

Young Frankenstein: “Walk this way.”

@Darwin “Fanmail from some flounder?”

erichw1504's avatar

No, but I quote Fluther inside jokes. Frizzer.

Darwin's avatar

@janbb – “Gotta get myself another hat!”

since watching bsg i say frak, and godsdamn alot

aprilsimnel's avatar

Hahaha! I also will say “A-gain?” like Rocket J. Squirrel when the situation lends itself to such smart-assery. Sometimes I quote Witch Hazel when I’m cooking: “A cup of arsenic, a spider, some gluehoo!” If only I could click my heels mid-air, zip away and lose hairpins in the process. June Foray, FTW!

monocle's avatar

I do that all the time.
Old looney tunes, MST3K, anything from Back To The Future to Kung Pow.
If I’m going up stairs with someone I’ll shout “Race you to the top!” like in Dumb & Dumber.
:D

erichw1504's avatar

@monocle Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!
