Do you dream of people from the past?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) December 8th, 2009

If you dream of anyone from your past who is no longer in your life (not because of death), what do your dreams about them usually consist of? Do you simply see them? Do you talk to them? If you talk to them, is it like you’re catching up or is it like you never stopped talking to them at all?

How often do you dream about them? Are the dreams good or bad? Do you have the dreams when you’re stressed or your life is calm? How do the dreams, overall, make you feel?

I’ve had a dream about my ex-boyfriend before. Some of them were after we broke up, but one of them was just recently and we’ve been broken up for over a year. In my dream we had a short conversation (but I don’t remember what it was about) and then he walked away. I’d say it was a good dream. I didn’t feel sad or upset after it or anything.

Sometimes I remember a dream that I had which included people or places from my past. It usually takes the form of a novel or story similar to a TV show, but with people and places I once knew.

I dream of my old friends from high school. In the dream it seem like we are still friends and we are just hanging out.

I have had a few dreams about my ex husband and I haven’t seen him in 10 years. The dreams are always confusing but seem to be along the same vein. We seem to be passing each other and never getting near enough to see each other, or we are looking for each other, but never connect. We never get to speak. They aren’t bad dreams, just a little disturbing.

I’ve dreamt about old playmates I had during my childhood (grade school age). In these dreams I don’t remember doing anything significant – just a jumble of memories, but I do remember waking up and finding myself missing these people. And my childhood.

no, but i do dream about people from the future.

My ex-husband appears in my dreams from time-to-time as if he is still alive and we are still a couple. We split up nearly 14 years ago, and he passed away 11 years ago. He shows up more often than any of the men I have been with before or since… which I figure is because we have a child together.

Actually, just today I had a dream where a couple of random people from my high school chorus showed up. They weren’t even people I was particularly close to. I guess they just happened to cross my mind for some reason…

Sarcasm's avatar

Nope. Just person. Just her from the past.

They’re such nice dreams. Such lame awakenings.

Sarcasm's avatar

@DrasticDreamer you dream of her too?!

Likeradar's avatar

All the damn time. I think the people aren’t in my dreams because of them, but what they represent, like feeling screwed over, feeling included, feeling left out, being cheated, feeling free… you know?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@Sarcasm Well, no. Just him.

@Likeradar GA, I think so too. I was having many dreams of my ex-husband and I think they were telling me to make my ex-boyfriend an ex.

often. always people I miss or have unfinished business with. My children, who are far away and were taken from me. in the dreams, they are babies or very young. My mother, who died, in the dreams, is as she was in life.

I still have dreams of an ex that I loved and still love very much. They are wonderful dreams that make me wish I could sleep just a little longer, but its harsh reality when I wake up alone. Lifes not perfect and not everybody can stay with you forever but I still have my dreams.

I’ve had dreams about my Mom and grandparents—they’ve all passed away. And, I also have a recurring dream where I am at the home of my childhood friend. She is not present in the dream, but, there are pictures of her and her family all around. It’s like they took off and left it as is. I’m always wandering through the house and it brings me back to a time when I was young. I practically lived there as a child. The dreams make me a bit sad; thinking about a time that I loved and now miss.

When I dream about my Mom, I think that it all has to do with me coming to terms with her death. The dreams are pretty rough. She’s sick and dying and everyone who is present in the dream knows that. It’s like I have to lose her all over again.

I had a dream where a guy I knew from one of my improv classes was in it, briefly. We didn’t speak. He was just there, like an extra.

Yes but I’m from the future so that’s everyone.

My dreams including people from the past are usually like @MacBean‘s….completely random people I’ve met over my life. I sometimes have dreams including exes, but it’s usually a super bizarre dream to begin with lol.

I recently had a dream about my grandfather who has past. We stood in a grassy meadow at sunset, I was a young boy again and he was hugging me. It was warm, and I was happy.

Often. I had a few dreams involving my best friend from school who I hadn’t seen for about 5 years. There was no falling out or anything, our lives just went seperate ways and we lost touch. However, the dreams made me think more and more about her and had me wondering how she was so in the end I decided to get back in touch. We have been meeting up regularly and I am pleased to say that she’s still the same person I got on so well with in school!

I dream of old friends more often than current ones…and usually, it’s as though no time has passed, and I am usually younger than I am now.

Sometimes, I will be dreaming that it is “real life”, and I just randomly run into a person I hadn’t seen in forever, and again, it’s like no time has passed.

I enjoy “seeing” these friends again, especially as they make me happy (in the dream), but then I wake up, and that makes me sad again. :(

They take you back to a time when psychological issues arose in your own psyche, your psyche now more able to resolve same.

I used to have those dreams of an ex. I would wake up and ache with a sweet but bitter pain so deep. If you ever really loved someone they are always a part of you. Thank God they’re rare now.

monocle's avatar

No, it’s always present or future. I don’t recall ever having a dream about someone from the past. I also never see myself in my dreams, but I know I’m there.

I often dream about a guy I had a thing for in high school since I was freshman. I have had one about him every few months or couple years, and I am 25 now, I really wish I knew why I have dreams about him, I probably need some kind of closure. The other night I had a dream about a guy I liked off and on throughout the school years, starting around 10 years old. In this dream he was kind of a hero because the dream was about like the end of the world or something threatening humanity, and everyone was separating into big groups to stay safe, then he came to the group I was in, and helped the group. I started to like him in the dream and he liked me too, and we were going to “hook up”, but another guy from my childhood showed up and I “hooked up” with him instead in the dream, he was never a guy I had a thing for or ever even really thought about at all, but he popped in randomly and it was very surprising. I am trying to figure out, why him? Most of these dreams are good if you get my drift, but why they have certain people in them, is what I wish I could figure out.

I just woke up from a weird weird dream. I was dreaming about people from my elementry school. We went to a catholic school and everyone knew each other for about 10 years so it was more like a family then a regular grade school. In the dream I can remember me feeling as if I was in the present day and 21 years old while I was talking to my friends in an auditorium like we were on a field trip. But the crazy thing is, is that my friends were still in 8th grade and I was in the present day trying to tell them that was 21 years old and knew how things were going to be and how people we knew are in the present day. I tried to explain to one of my best friends back then who he was now and how other friends ive seen recently are now then from there past selves. I kept trying to portray this message to them but they couldnt understand what I was talking about. I felt kinda worried during the whole dream. We were on a huge platform in the sky where the auditorium was and there was snack bars and everything outside of it. It was nuts….sorry kinda crazy but it was one of the weirdest dreams ive ever experienced…..i woke up and was like whoa…..
