Where might one find an inexpensive MacBook Pro?

Asked by Kade13 (185points) December 8th, 2009

I fear my current laptop is coming to the end of its cycle as my primary machine and i now require something a little more powerful. I would like a 15” Macbook Pro that i can use to power through all my Photoshopping and movie editing needs, so i would like a machine with a fairly capable graphics card and a decent processor. Memory is fairly easy to upgrade so this is not a major concern.

Is there any place where i might be able to purchase a good quality second hand or refurbished Macbook that won’t break after a week? I did consider the apple refurbs but even they are only £100 or so cheaper than the normal prices and i can get 14% discount as a student there so not being able to purchase the refurbs instore means its cheaper to buy new from Apple.

Save yourself the worry and just buy new. Use your student discount and get the extended warranty that way you have peace of mind. If you can find it cheap you have to wonder why.

In the US I would say use Craig’s List, but I don’t know if there is an equivalent where you live.

There may be one at http://www.secondhandmac.co.uk/ that will meet your needs.

Sometimes Apple has refurbs. Your best bet is to keep checking the site. They’re tested and come to you as though brand new, but you can save several hundred dollars that way.

I don’t know where you are located but the MacSuperStore (California and Colorado) has refurbished macs at good prices, and I believe they do offer some kind of warranty.

I guess i should clarify, I’m not concerned about it being the latest iteration of the Macbook Pro series, i wouldn’t mind it being anything after 2008 when apple switched the line over to the 9400M nVidia series graphics cards. I believe those models were MB470*/A or MB471*/A, surely there have to be a few of those available second hand from all the avid apple fans that switched as soon as the SSD and unibody-eco friendly-infinite battery Pros came out.

PS. I live in England

@DarwinCraigslist in the UK!

I couldn’t find anything on a UK site for less than £969. That’s about US$1575.

If it’s possible to ship from Los Angeles, you could try applepalace.com. I saw a MB refurb model on that site for US$1299. It says free shipping, but I’m positive they mean only in the US. I don’t think you’re going to get much lower than that for that model line. The MA’s can be had as low as US$1079.

Buy it new. The refurb prices are only 10% off.

@Darwin – I bow to your Google-fu.

I saw this on the www.secondhandmac.co.uk site but unfortunately its already gone.. it was a good price point as well with about £500 off list price.. but it seems like a good site so i will keep checking it to see if any other similar deals come up in the future. Perhaps i will get lucky.. but i can’t see the one for £555.

Either way thanks for the site

At that price I am not surprised it’s gone already.
