Who would I take my car to, to have the tow bar taken off?

Asked by MissAnthrope (21511points) December 8th, 2009

U-Haul put it on and I’d like to have it taken off so I can put it on another car. Would any mechanic do this, or are there certain places you go?

I would think U-Haul would also take it off for you, but I’m not entirely sure on that.

I should imagine even a handy neighbor could do it for you.

I’d do it, if I were nearby.

@proXXi – Aw, thanks!

So, basically, I can get under there with a ratchet set and remove it?

I’d just take it back to the original installer. If you do it yourself, you always take the risk of damage to the part or to yourself. If you are OK with that, then go ahead.

U-Haul put it on, let them take it off. If they break anything, they will fix it. If you take both cars in they can move it from one to the other for you

(P.S. I am a U-Haul dealer)

@DrBill – Can I get a discount on my trailer (nudge, wink)? I kid, I kid. Thanks for answering, how fortunate for me that you are a U-Haul expert!

I think I’m going to have to do the two cars separately, though your solution would be perfect, no muss, no fuss. I’m trading in my poor, clunky baby towards a newer car, so I don’t think I’ll have possession of both at the same time.

I once had someone come in towing a car on a trailer. We unloaded the car, unhooked the trailer, switch the hitch, hook up the trailer and load the other car. It looked like a Chinese fire drill

keep it on it may tempt more buyers when you sell it on!

@DAVETHERAV1D – I thought about that, for sure. Thankfully the dealership is accepting my current car as a trade-in, so I am going to remove it because I need to use it on my next car. I have a verrrrry long drive ahead of me and I need a trailer to pull all my crap. :)
