Blisters in the corners of my mouth/lips and dentists...query?

Asked by nebule (16452points) December 8th, 2009

SO I went to the dentist on Monday to have an impression done for a night-guard and it was a horrible experience. It’s a new dentist that I have just been assigned to (because I’m on benefits I don’t pay for NHS Dental treatment but I’ve been with a private dentist until now…) and have not been at all impressed by the quality of care but anyway…

The dentist didn’t even know what she was supposed to be doing…she started doing a check up and had to be told 3 times that I was there for impressions. Then they couldn’t get the mixture right. and then the mould that she literally shoved in my mouth seemed way to big.

Anyway I woke up yesterday with really really painful corners of my mouth… you know where the top lip joins the bottom lip at the sides. By lunchtime blisters had appeared. My lips are swollen slightly on the inside too and feel bruised.

It seems silly to go to the Doctor for something like this. What is this? I’ve NEVER had cold sores (even when dating boyfriends with them) so have they infected me…. or are these blisters something else? I’m a bit concerned about what I should do about them…and about the incompetent dentist!!!

grrrrrr

When I’ve gotten impressions or dental work that has taken a while I’ve gotten REALLY mild blisters the next day or so….yours seem a lot worse, but I would assume they’ll go away…

Maybe you were allergic to the materials used in the mold? Or they mixed the stuff wrong and made something stronger than they should have?

I’m like @deni, and have had that happen, too. I never thought too much about it because it went away after a few days. Rinse your mouth with salt water. Can you call the office back and tell them what’s going on? Ask specifically about allergies to the mold material.

I’m not too familiar with the UK health system rules, but can you request to be assigned to a different dentist? That’s what I would do. You shouldn’t have to suffer from someone else’s incompetence.

Night guard? Like to stop gritting your teeth in your sleep? If so, my dentist just told me to go the the sports section at Wal mart and get a pliable rubbery plastic mouth guard. When you get home, dunk it in boiling water for a few secs, then put it in your mouth and bite down. Hold it until the mouth pieced cools down. Viola. Fit specifically to your mouth. PS…you don’t need both the top and bottom piece…just one or the other. Also, I have a small mouth so I had to get one designed for kids.

Get a different dentist.

the blisters will go away. it’s from the alginate they use, it’s very drying to the skin. put some vaseline or ointment on it. you don’t need to see a dr. about it. dentists aren’t trained to do alginate impressions, don’t know how to mix it right, we had assistants to do that- sounds like they are short handed, it’ll be ok.

ok thank you @trailsillustrated that’s great info! xxx

…oh and @Buttonstc yes, I’m going to ask to be put on my sister’s dentist’s list…apparently he is really lovely… so we’ll just have to wait

Sounds like you were handled too roughly. I would call the dentist and let him know what your experience was like. He probably has no clue. I’m an ex dental assistant and I’ve seen too many times dentists fresh out of school who spent too much time working on cadavers and dummies and not real people. Sorry that happened to you!

Hi! I Also suffered the same Problem during the time dentist was taking impressions my lips had a very burning sensation, even after rinsing mouth I got Blisters in my upper and lower Lips

Mainly the outer lip area , But after one weeks and applying vaseline they have reduced ,

I think they are using some allergic substances for taking impression or it was burning hot to cause burned Lips.

Thanks for this post I almost thought I had Scary infection earlier ..
