I live in the United States, where it appears things must be very different. The suffering here is caused by certain Christians. Christianity is in the overwhelming majority here, and as a result, Christian beliefs, traditions and mores are ubiqutous, and unbelievers are punished.

As an example (you may not believe this is possible in a modern world, but it is true), a national leader could not be elected here if he or she were an unbeliever! Very ironic, isn’t it, as our nation was actually based on freedom of belief!

Until just 40 years or so ago, houses were sold with restrictive deed covenants that prohibited their sale to Jews. Great Universities had “Jewish Quotas” where the number of Jewish students was restricted, and many country clubs and resorts did not allow Jews to become members. Similarly, in the professions of law, advertising, banking and brokerage it was necessary for Jews to form Jewish firms, because Jews were not hireable at the majority institutions.

Now things are somewhat different, but in most ways it is still most comfortable to be a Christian here in this country. It is especially undesirable at this moment to believe in Islam, for example.

Also Christians continue to have outsized power in imposing their beliefs on others. A majority of Americans continues to believe in the right of a mother to decide, with the assistance of her doctor, whether or not an abortion is necessary, but Christians have imposed restrictions on this right, and continue to clamor for more.

Homosexuals are among the groups in this country most punished by Christians. They have been singled out as a subset of humanity whom Christians wish not to be able to express their love for one another, and they suffer a great deal as a result.

Where you live, it must be very different, so I am eager to hear from you how, in your land, Christians are an oppressed minority.

The worst suffering I have is from other Christians. I am often mistake for a Republican.because I am a Christian. (How embarrassing!)
People assume that I am some sort of hate monger. I am constantly having to say, “Don’t judge God by the people who claim to follow him.” And my heart aches that fellow Christians who I know and love are being led away from an attitude of love and charity down a path of selfishness, fear and bitterness.

don’t get me started… a hell of a lot… many of the ones that I have known and met have been the most hypocritical, judgemental people I’ve come across…it’s a dangerous subject!

Wow, this is turning into what Christians did to other people instead of how the question was actually worded. Scary. I think Christianity gets a bad rap because it encompasses so many different denominations and belief systems. It is easy to slip into generalization because that distinction just isn’t there.. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard of things that other “Christians” would do or say and be appalled by it..

As a Christian (an independent baptist.. a bible believing Christian), I can’t say that I’ve really “suffered” .. because I think of suffering as something more tragic than many people would claim.

Almost daily on fluther I am textually shouted at and my beliefs ridiculed.. but it really doesn’t bother me.. I’ve found it to be the norm .. so it isn’t surprising anymore. But do I “suffer”? Not at all. I’d wager that most people who complain of suffering have no idea what suffering is.

The Jews in Germany suffered. The Soldiers at Bastogne suffered. Jesus Christ suffered. Nowadays it seems that people have much softer skin than they used to and bump up their troubles to suffering at the drop of a hat. That’s just my opinion.

I was crucified…. No—wait that was some other guy. But he was Jewish rather than Christian. Never mind.

I had hardships from being a Christian. I knew my beliefs didn’t make sense, but spent months of solid research trying to rescue it. I was distracted from my studies, disturbed and had trouble sleeping for a long time because it was so hard to be a Christian when my rational side started screaming that it was so false.

Since rejecting it, I have found the greatest peace with myself that I have ever known.
