What happens to duplicate questions here?

Asked by JustPlainBarb (5027points) December 14th, 2009

I was wondering if duplicate questions are flagged here by moderators and if questioner is alerted that theirs was a duplicate. Also, are there penalties for that?

When they are put up for editing the user gets notified, with a message from the moderator.

Dupes just get deleted I think?

@pjanaway Thanks I appreciate that info.

“I was wondering if duplicate questions are flagged”

They get flagged and you get flogged.

@ChazMaz Well I guess I better watch it then!! Thanks.

If you really want to know, I can show you….

They get removed along with the message “Your question is a duplicate.” Usually we take the time to either remind you how to search the site or we’ll actually find the previous question for you, but sometimes we’re in a hurry and do not. It depends. Either way, you can always edit the question so that it is no longer a duplicate, but still on the same topic.

@EmpressPixie Very helpful information. How do you search the site for dupicates?

JustPlainBarb's avatar

@Cotton101 I agree and thanks so much Cotton

hey, they (mods) have rejected about every question I’ve asked…wow, maybe AB was not so bad! grrrrr

what is the easy way to find your question? off the subject, but we new users are looking for answers.

New peeps from AB, this might help:

Q. How do I know if the Q I want to ask on Fluther has been asked previously?
Well first off, thank you for wanting to do that. Second, it’s the same way as searching for a username on Fluther. Use the search box on the main page with main words from your Q and see what results come up. For example, if you want to ask something related to the Olympics, search “olympics” and check out the results before you post a duplicate Q.

You’re welcome. :)

What about the answers that have been posted to a dupe question? Do they lose their GAs or whatever? Do they disappear? If somebody edits the question so the answers are no longer relevant, then what?

Jude's avatar

“Lurve points” for you good answer? They are yours to keep. You’ll find them under “Lurve What the…?” on the right hand side of your page. If the question was deleted, the GA that you posted will be deleted, as well, unfortunately.

Yes, sometimes that happens; people go to edit their question, and then your answer does not make any sense. I usually come back into the thread and point out the fact that the person who posted the question edited it, and, that my question no longer makes any sense. I then go ahead and answer the edited question. No big deal. :)

If the answers just make absolutely no sense once the question is edited, we often suggest that the OP asks an entirely new question.
