Is it possible to make healthy popcorn and, if so, how?

Movie popcorn is very unhealthy according to studies. Is it possible to make healthy popcorn at home and, if so, how?

Popcorn by itself is fairly healthy. It’s when you add butter, salt, or butter-flavored goo on it that it becomes unhealthy.

At least, that’s what I’ve always been told.

Get an old fashioned popper and don’t put any butter or salt on it.

Drop the pound of salt & gallon of butter & it’s quite good for you

Air poppers, popping in vegetable oil, actually, it’s harder to make unhealthy popcorn. It doesn’t take much oil at all, and if you use a non-hydrogenated vegetable oil, it’s quite healthy. I do use a bit of salt, but you don’t need as many people use.

Air popped (they have machines for this), and then brewer’s yeast and tamari.

Put a small handful of kernels in a paper lunch sack. Roll up the top. Microwave for 2 minutes.

It’s microwave popcorn without all the crap and chemicals. Works perfect and no need to buy an air popper that will only be used for one purpose, most everyone already has a microwave.

I third the air popper suggestion. You don’t need to use any butter or oil and that’s what makes the popcorn so bad for you. The salt aspect isn’t necessarily bad unless you have hypertension or some other medical condition like that, usually your body deals very well with even high intakes of sodium.

For toppings, you can use anything powdered sprinkled on. They have popcorn seasoning you can buy, or you can make up your own. I’ve used a low fat cheese powder (forget the brand name), chili powder, you name it.

Great answers here… I agree. Popcorn in itself is pretty healthy. It’s the way you cook it and what you add to it later that can make it no so great for you. I used to eat it drenched in butter and salt .. but now it’s just fine plain. My friend Duke told me that “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” has a spray with no fat in it that tastes pretty good on popcorn. I even love to eat Popcorn cakes which are a variation of Rice Cakes .. which are pretty bland. These are tasty and not bad for you.

pop it with a laser

I generally pop mine with a little olive oil, and while I always used to use butter, once I stopped using butter I wondered why on earth we ever started to put butter on popcorn. I adds pretty much nothing. In fact it is one of the few places where I will admit that butter does not make it taste better.

1. get an air popper
2. buy some organic bulk popcorn
3. pop it
4. top it with either nutritional yeast or some grated parmesan
5. enjoy! oh, and if you’re like certain flutherites, that means using a spoon to eat it :P

Interestingly, even movie theater popcorn can be made much healthier just by switching from coconut oil to canola oil. The studies show that Cinemark theaters, which have done this, have just 5 grams of saturated fat in their largest popcorn, while AMC and Regal, who have not, have 57 and 60 grams of saturated fat, respectively. (all without butter topping, which you should really never get).

Popcorn also has the added benefit of supplying fiber to your diet, so air-popped popcorn can be an excellent snack food.

Old Bay seasoning is a better alternative to butter. I believe they also have a low sodium version. Old Bay makes everything delicious.

Old Bay, I’ve missed you my friend. It’s been far too long.

Popcorn is healthy, at least healthy than a handful of potato chips. As long as it’s not smothered in butter and salt. Or caramel, or chocolate, or anything for that matter.
