When has time slowed for you?

Asked by The_Big_Nickle (97points) December 16th, 2009

Have you lived that moment where everything slowed down? That one instance that stretched far longer then you thought possible, where every detail was clear and all was in focus…when has time slowed for you?

Yeah, that happens to me a couple times each week.

When I was stabbed.

I experienced myself (in slo-mo) drop to my knees, then recover enough to chase my assailant onto the street, grab his clothes from behind, and pummel him until I was pulled off.

I also recall observing this scene from a distance…what you might call “out of body”.

@SABOTEUR , So he didn’t get away I presume? Crazy sensation to say the least.

When scuba diving.
When jumping out a plane.

@The_Big_Nickle: Yes and no. He was apprehended, but the case never went to trial…plea bargain.

Only one time that I can remember. My husband and I were newly married and we came from grocery shopping. It was winter and cold and the ground was covered with fresh snow. There was a full moom and he wrapped his arms around me to keep me warm as we waited for the taxi to come. There was such a beautiful stillness in the night and it felt as if time stood still.

@Pandora Beautiful answer, thanks for sharing.
@ChazMaz , those are two things that have been on my list to do for a long time. Thanks for answering.

When my ex-husband said he wanted a divorce. Everything just stopped and I wasn’t sure it would ever move forward again. It did, and to better things, but at that time, it seemed like slow motion.

The one time I’ll never forget when this happened, I was in jail for three days…longest three days ever!

@tedibear39 , Thank you for answering.
@forestGeek , yeah….jail sucks.

The trip from home to basic training was also extremely long. Interesting story actually. The first flight I was on, we took off, took a u-turn and landed back at the airport. We were probably only in the air for about 10 minutes. They pulled this old guy off the plane and I watched out my window as paramedics tried to revive him. Which I believe was unsuccessfull. It was quite a good start to one of the scariest and hardest things that I was about to go through.

The fraction of a second between the time when my motorcycle collided with the side of my girlfriend’s car and when I landed on the asphalt about 30 feet away. Felt like minutes.

Crystal clarity. Thought and action were in perfect sync. I remember purposely releasing the handlebars and also tucking my chin in order to roll on landing. Got up without a scratch.

Same sort of thing happened to me on my mountain bike one time, too. When you see concrete coming up at your face really fast, you want to know how to react.

Waiting at the Toronto airport for my sister and her hubby. There were bringing home my one year old adopted niece from China. That was the first time that we all got to meet her.

When playing sports it’s amazing how everything seems to slow way down. Such as when swinging at a ball or making a tackle.
Also I quit smoking almost three weeks ago and it seems like it’s been three or four years since I’ve smoked my last cigarette.

When I was about 15, out riding my bike, I had a sudden accident. I flew off my bike, over the handlebars, and while I was flying through the air like Superman, everything was going in slow motion. I’m lucky that time seemingly slowed because if it hadn’t, I would have hit my head on the corner of a curb – and I wasn’t wearing a helmet. Before I hit the ground I was able to twist my body so my head didn’t hit anything. Before making a very hard and painful landing, I remember thinking that what was happening was really cool.

Everytime I fly, the takeoff and landing both seem to last forever.

I’ve been in several car accidents and all but one time I saw everything in slow motion.

I was once assaulted and experienced it all in slow motion.

When walking my little dog, a bigger dog looked friendly like it was going to sniff my dog’s face but I saw in slow motion how it was really opening it’s mouth and pulling it’s lips back to attack instead so I scooped up my dog in one hand. I could hear both dogs breathing, people talking, walking by- only the motions of me and the two dogs were slowed down, everything else registered to my ears at normal speed.

I was 24, at my first job out of college as a hostess at a casual restaurant, and this woman would not be satisfied with anywhere I tried to seat her. At the last table, she harangued me loudly for what the bartender said was only a couple of seconds before I walked off and got the manager (she kept yelling), but it just seemed to go on and on and on….

I was 10 years old. My big sister got mad at me, and threw a can of deoderant at me. The can seemed to stop in mid-air as I watched it coming. When it hit me, it split my head open, and I bled like a stuck pig. I still have a scar from it.

At the park overlooking the river while snow fell and the ex and I snuggled for warmth. Also when I came home to find another girl in my house with him. Heart pounding, blood boiling, and infuriated. I remember every detail except what the girl looked like. Odd.

I rolled a car once. It was an amazing experience (thirty years ago this month). I had fallen asleep at the wheel at 2 AM on an Interstate in Georgia. I drifted left into the median grass, and the roughness woke me up. But I reacted too quickly, spun the wheel too hard to the right, and started doing a donut on the slick grass. I spun back across my original travel lanes, and headed 180° wrong, rolled into a 12’ ditch on my original side of the road. The car rolled 360°, so I landed on my wheels and experienced pieces of the smashed windshield raining into my lap. I recall that whole experience as if it took longer to occur than to write about, but it all happened in seconds.

Fortunately I just opened the door and walked uninjured out of the car and up the ditch… to where the trucker who had been following me about a mile away was just pulling up to stop and see if I had even survived. I have been such a lucky boy sometimes.

CyanoticWasp's avatar

@DrasticDreamer Wow. I wasn’t going to mention that, but I recall the exact same, “Wow, so this is what that is like!” feeling. And wondering if I would survive.

Yes I have, it was very surreal. Someone I loved had just exposed their hidden dark side. I knew it was there and I excepted them the way they were, but when they realized that I saw it and had always seen it, it was too much for them. I stood there and watched them move out of my life like they were on an invisible people mover. One of the most fascinating moments of my life.

trista1504's avatar

yes i have. it was during the summer at a friends wedding. i meet this really sweet guy and it felt as though time was standing still just so we could talk. we ended up hanging out at her after wedding party and he was just the sweetest person i had ever ment. thats when time slowed right down for me.
