What's you favorite fortune cookie wisdom?

Asked by Silhouette (8850points) December 19th, 2009

Most of us read the messages we get in our fortune cookies. These are two of my favorites.. “You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first.” & ” You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
Have you found wisdom in a fortune cookie that changed the way you live your life? Can you share that fortune and tell us a little about how it changed your life?

I opened one that was blank. For once, one of those damn cookies didn’t try and push it’s knowledge on me!

“today you will read a fortune cookie” :-o

“You like chinese food”
.....I also liked the one that said “A closed mouth doesn’t gather feet”

I love my local Chinese restaurant to bits, but their fortune cookies are usually pretty dumb. They tend to rely on knowledge of my personal life that they happen not to have.

‘Carve your name on your heart and not on a marble’. I love that one.

“You just lost the game.”

Not really. But if I ever end up in the fortune cookie business, I’m definitely going to do everything in my power to sneak that phrase into the wisdom database.

the other day mine was “if only we knew the real value of the day”. on the back, the “learn chinese” word was July, and the first lucky number was 9. my birthday is july 9, and clearly my existence ups the value of a day, so i really took it to heart.

Fortune cookies taste like sugary cardboard and thier “wisdom” is usually daft, but have you ever seen the trouble people cause when they DONT get one with thier meal? it’s funny.

I loved one I remember which said “You will meet a stranger” – I mean well Duh! but I still keep opening them hoping they will change my life…........oh yes.

My favorite was, “You laugh now, wait until you get home.”

Eek, a little ominous.

I know we’re making up a few in here, but I actually got one that said: “You should get in touch with your feminine side”

I would be very offended to read that if I was a woman, aren’t they supposed to try and keep those things gender neutral?

laureth's avatar

Feminine sides are pretty gender neutral, seeing as everyone has one. <shrug>

I suspect that the traditional idea is that the gods of randomness (whatever be the Chinese equivalent) give everyone a fortune cookie text that suits their individual life. So if the writers just put in enough different bits of advice, everyone will get a right one.

Of course, it doesn’t work.

I had a really, really, freaky one 3 weeks ago. It said “An interesting sports opportunity will present itself to you soon”. I thought: “Funny, how often do you get something that is not just poetically written common knowledge?”

Well I swear to God, 10 minutes later my roommate comes home early and asks me to go to the gym with him.
