Has a poltical party ever decided to not have the current President run for a second term, choosing someone else from the party to run?

Not sure I am being clear. The current day example would be Democrats deciding Obama could not win a second time and running someone else, my secret hope would be Hillary Clinton. I am wondering if it has ever happened in history, and also want to know if that person went on to win?
