Keurig Coffee Makers - Experience? Cost?

Asked by srmorgan (6773points) December 20th, 2009

My wife wants a Keurig single cup coffee and tea maker.
My concern is the single cup issue – does it make a quality cup of coffee?
Moreover, the cost seems to be around 55 cents per cup and off the top of my head that is fairly expensive compared to using ground coffee and the coffee maker that we have.

My wife says that we waste half the carafe because we have to brew six cups minimum and we do not drink that much coffee in a given morning.

Is this worth the money and am I right about the costs?\

I have no experience with them ; BUT I saw one at Kohl’s for $129 , I believe… give them a call… and if you have a 15% or higher coupn , you’ll SAVE even more .

Yes. You are correct about the cost issue. The cheapest Keurig is $99. Then you are locked into using those pre-formed cups. It’s not an option to use your own preferred coffee.

You would be much better off with a Melitta one cup. This enables you to use whichever brand of coffee you wish and also fresh grind it yourself as this gives the best flavor.

What the Keurig gives you is neglible convenience at a premium cost CONTINUALLY.

What you are sacrificing is way too much flavor and way too much money.

They are okay. the only thing that concerns me is that i see a lot of them at Goodwill and i wonder whey so many are there? i have never owned one, but you do have to wonder. we have always used Cusiniart. they are expensive, but they are the cadillac of the coffeemakers. once you own one, everything else is junk.

I don’t have one so I can’t vouch for the taste of the coffee, but my neighbor has one. She buys her coffee packs at B.J.‘s and that cuts the cost some. But they also make a reusable “blank cartridge” that you can put your own coffee in. And they sell them at Bed, Bath and Beyond and you can use 20% off coupons on them and all the accessories.

@John

My guess on why there are so many at Goodwill is because they are a “fad” item.

People got tired of shelling out an exhorbitant amount for those pods which are filled with pre-ground (stale) coffee.

The key problem with these things is their lack of versatility. If there were some way to use your own choice of coffee that would increase their usefulness.

But it would sharply decrease profits for all the makers of the pods :)

I was typing while your answer posted. Do you know if those blank cartridges to which you refer are suitable for any brand or just for the Keurig?

I’ve never heard of those. Are they available anyplace other than BJs?

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!! It makes great coffee. If you are really that worried about cost, they have an insert you can buy to use your own coffee. The choices are great. Check out the flavors here&__utmz=1.1261352210.1.1.utmcsr=google|utmccn=(organic)|utmcmd=organic|utmctr=green%20mountain%20keurig%20k%20cups&__utmv=&__utmk=266105871
Edit: Don’t ask me what all that extra crap is, but I’m afraid I’ll mess up the link if I remove it!

The Keurig system is terrific and it does brew a quality cup of coffee. Each k-cup is sealed air-tight so the grounds remain fresh until used. If you buy your k-cups from Amazon.com as part of their “Subscribe & Save” program, you can get 50 k-cups for about $18, or 36 cents a cup. I obtained my machine at no cost via American Express Reward points and absolutely love it. There is no clean-up necessary and only periodic maintenance (descaling) is required. I’m a picky coffee drinker and grinding beans and making a pot with all the clean-up required was difficult with my disabilities so I had given up coffee drinking for a couple of years. With this system, I am back to enjoying several cups of coffee and perhaps a cup of tea or hot chocolate everyday, brewed fresh, one cup at a time…..no fuss, no muss. See ya…..Gary/wtf

I have a Keurig… actually, I have 2, my newer one is the single cup and it’s pretty awesome. I don’t think it’s that expensive for the coffee… and I use Newman’s Own kcups, which is nice because proceeds go to charity. There’s also an insert that you can buy or that comes with some of them (I’m not sure) and you put your own coffee in it. I think it’s a great investment.

@Buttonstc The ones I know about are specifically made for the Keurig. They sell them at Bed, Bath and Beyond and I think they are 14.95. I was considering buying one of the machines, haven’t yet but, that was one my issues. Not just because cost but the little cups and all the packaging for them seemed wasteful, from an environmental point of view. Plus there are certain coffees I really like and wanted to make sure that I could still drink them if I bought the machine.

The pros: It’s neat and clean, you make only as much as you want, and the coffee choices are great and they’re widely available (Kuerig.com, amazon, Target, etc).

The cons: You have to buy k-cups, it’s not as economical as bagged coffee. There’s also more packaging used (I don’t recall if the cups are recyclable).
