Does anyone know if the social security disability people are going to get a stimulus check again in 2010? Has the bill been passed?

Asked by silky1 (1510points) December 20th, 2009

We received one last year and with no cost of living increase I was wondering if this year was also approved for disability recipients.

There is “TALK” that people on Disability will get a one time $250 check to make up for not having the cola this year… BUT; I’m not for sure if it has passed yet, or not.

@HighShaman OOH WEE!! $250 dollars !!! I wonder how the Cayman Island’s bank system is going to handle that overflow of funds being deposited by disable Americans into their offshore accounts.

@Pretty_Lilly The same goes for those on regular Social Security and any type of federal government checks…

According to this site there will indeed be a $250 stimulus check issued to those who get SSI. I would say that this particular blogger is overly optimistic, however.

You see, the money (actually an “emergency COLA”) is provided for in H.R. 3557, which was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means back on September 14, 2009, and which hasn’t been acted on in any way yet.

There is a related bill, H.R. 3572, which has also been referred to House Ways and Means back on September 15, 2009, and which also has had no action past that.

In other words, Obama would like to issue a stimulus check, and at least some members of Congress want to make it so (Rep. Rodney Alexander [R-LA5] and four others on one bill, and Rep. Walter Jones [R-NC3] on the other). However, nothing has been done to make it possible yet.

Either bill still needs to be Reported by Committee, pass the House Vote, pass the Senate Vote, and then be Signed by the President before it can be put into action, and the vast majority of bills referred to committee never get back out again.

In other words, nothing has passed to make it happen.

If you did receive another $250.00 dollars, what would you do with it? what did you do with the last $250.00 dollars? i have an idea what the drug addicts and alcoholics did with their money.

Well; if I was to receive the $250 ; I’d add it to my savings to help pay the real estate taxes OR I’d use it to get hte computer piece for my car, so it won’t keep shutting down every half mile or so…

I’m not on disability but it is my understanding Social Security ended benefits for individuals considered disable by addiction.

john65pennington : While we too get Social Security because my husband is disabled, our budget is such that $250 is a nice windfall but not one that will make a huge difference in our lives. We have the additional advantage of his being a Texas disabled veteran so some useful state laws help us out quite a bit.

However, a friend of ours lived only on his Social Security payments, which were based on many fewer years of work, a much lower salary base, and a non-service connected cause of his disability. For him, $250 would have been a huge addition to his monthly budget, letting him eat meat, or buy some books, or take a taxi to his medical appointments instead of a bus, or even allow him to run the A/C during the hottest days.

While to some of us $250 doesn’t seem like much, to others it is a great gift. Unless we walk in each others’ shoes we really cannot judge.
