Are incandescent light bulbs being eliminated?

Asked by UScitizen (4306points) December 20th, 2009

I was recently told that in the near future, incandescent light bulbs will no longer be available. Is this true?

not sure, seems LEDs are the wave of the future, but then, LED traffic lights don’t get hot enough to melt off the snow that sticks to them. I wouldn’t worry about it too much yet, even with Obama in power, the tree huggers don’t have the sort of power to ban incandescents.

In the US, bulbs between 40 and 150 watts will have to meet efficiency standards which today’s incandescents cannot meet. It’s being phased in from 2012 (150 watt bulbs) to 2014 (40 watters).

Bigger and smaller wattage bulbs are not included.

When it happens, it will happen because the new technology will reach the right price-point, and will seem better to us. It might be LED, it might not have been invented yet.

@camouflage_pants
The bulb phaseout was signed by Bush in 2007
And the snow-covered LEDs in Green Bay which made the news are seven years old. Last week’s odd storm was the first to cover them up.

The new led lights suck. I replaced a burned out 60w incandescent with a new 60w “equivalent” bulb. I could get more light from a glow worm than from that thing.

I think LEDs are not ready for the home yet, the good ones are too expensive.

According to my recent research, LEDs are extremely sensitive to power spikes. I’ve bought a few different kinds, and those with Edison bases are the most hardy. They are mostly spot-type lights, and none seem to be able to produce the all around glow one gets from an incandescent.

@jaytkay, As for Bush signing anything, let’s wait to see if the really important thing he signed makes it to fruition. The law where insurance companies have to pay for mental health issues the same as other medical health issues. That one is due to become law January 1st, 2010. As for the traffic light thing, don’t ruin it for me, I am trying to invent and patent a new kind of traffic light. :)

Yes. I think there is some chance the law will be repealed but I am not taking any chances. Instead I plan to purchase 2000 incandescents and give them away to freedom-lovers at Christmas time for decades. That is only $500 worth.
