What movie is this from?

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) December 21st, 2009

My friend is pulling her hair out trying to remember in what movie this scene occurs:

“Man and Woman go to a restaurant; Man’s intention is to get Woman to order something different. Woman circumvents Man by ordering from the menu, then asking Waiter to hold a long list of ingredients. Waiter responds with something akin to: “So… basically you want a piece of dry chicken breast. ...I’ll see if the chef is up for the challenge.”

Sound familiar??

@Kelly_Obrien Ha, yeah I only quoted it because that was what my friend had written.

This sounds a lot like the scene in Five Easy Pieces where Jack Nicholson’s character finds that he can’t order some plain toast with his meal, so he orders a chicken sandwich on the side, toasted, and minus the chicken. I think any scene subsequent to this that follows the same format has to bow to this one (from the 70s? or the 60s?) as the original.

1970. And this from the Wikipedia entry:

Dupea: I’d like a plain omelette, no potatoes, tomatoes instead, a cup of coffee, and wheat toast.
Waitress: No substitutions.
Dupea: What do you mean? You don’t have any tomatoes?
Waitress: Only what’s on the menu. You can have a number two – a plain omelette. It comes with cottage fries and rolls.
Dupea: Yeah, I know what it comes with. But it’s not what I want.
Waitress: Well, I’ll come back when you make up your mind.
Dupea: Wait a minute. I have made up my mind. I’d like a plain omelette, no potatoes on the plate, a cup of coffee, and a side order of wheat toast.
Waitress: I’m sorry, we don’t have any side orders of toast…an English muffin or a coffee roll.
Dupea: What do you mean you don’t make side orders of toast? You make sandwiches, don’t you?
Waitress: Would you like to talk to the manager?
Dupea: ...You’ve got bread and a toaster of some kind?
Waitress: I don’t make the rules.
Dupea: OK, I’ll make it as easy for you as I can. I’d like an omelette, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce. And a cup of coffee.
Waitress: A number two, chicken sal san, hold the butter, the lettuce and the mayonnaise. And a cup of coffee. Anything else?
Dupea: Yeah. Now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven’t broken any rules.
Waitress: You want me to hold the chicken, huh?
Dupea: I want you to hold it between your knees.
Waitress: Do you see that sign, sir? Yes, you’ll all have to leave. I’m not taking any more of your smartness and sarcasm.
Dupea: You see this sign? [He sweeps all the water glasses and menus off the table]

That seems like a variation of this scene from “Five Easy Pieces”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wtfNE4z6a8

@sliceswiththings, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days?

Five Easy Pieces was my first thought upon reading the question.

It is such an iconic scene it’s hard to forget even tho not described too accurately :)

Thanks, @PandoraBoxx, I’ll suggest it! @Buttonstc I’m going to have to see this movie now!

I wish I had a better memory for these things. It was a romantic comedy, and there were several parodies of famous scenes from other movies. Will keep digging. I’ve seen this scene.

Isn’t it When Harry Met Sally?

sliceswiththings's avatar

@SarasWhimsy No, there are similar scenes since Sally is a picky eater (and of course the famous orgasm scene) but not this one. Thanks for the suggestion!

@slices

Well,in not sure if I would really recommend the entire movie, oddly enough.

That one scene was the best
part of the movie (as I recall) and it’s iconic because of the inimitable Jack Nicholson.

I’m not even sure if it would have been as memorable were it another actor.

However, it was a long time ago that I saw of and if the rest of the film has any redeeming qualities, anybody else feel free to chime in.

I just wouldn’t be recommending it at the top of any lists, if ya know what mean?

@Buttonstc For sure. I’ll see it I find the vhs at a tag sale for ten cents.
