Your new Mac has a built-in set up wizard that will take you through the steps.

there are several ways to do this. If you have a network at home, you can mount the PC's hard drive as a networked server, and transfer the files manually, or you can just load all your files onto a flash-drive, CD, or any other removable media, and move the files that way. Please keep in mind that not all your pc files will work on a Mac. Thankfully, there are many programs out there that maximize compatibility between the platforms. if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I don't know how to hook up the computers to each other directly. But if you go to the Finder and open up "Mac Help" from the Help menu, they have a section called "Switching from Windows" that will tell you some ways to transfer your files, and give you partial instructions. (They don't tell you how to set up the Windows computer.)

If your windows computer can burn CDs, that might be the simplest way. (Provided you don't have many files.)

I have an external Hard Drive (250 Gb).

I used it to put all my files form my PC in my Mac, just like you would do between two PC's. After that, providing you have the right software, it works fine !

Sometimes I just email files to myself. If you're moving a bunch though, I'd highly recommend a USB flash memory card. They're getting pretty cheap nowadays, and they're compatible with both PC and mac computers.

I agree that if it's just files then email it to yourself. If it's multimedia files, you can always upload it to a direct download website, like yousendit.com or something, there's many of them, and then send the link to your email and download it from your Mac computer. These direct download websites allow you to download at very high speeds, but then you have to do it within a time frame. The link will expire in a few days.

I think the best an most easiest way to do this is to transfer the PC files(movies, music, documents) to an external hard drive, and then transfer from the hard drive to the Mac.

Another way which was noted and is more slow than the hard drive method is to connect the computers together via a Network Connection. To do so you would:
On the PC:
Find the folders you that have the files you want to move over. Right Click on the folder, choose Properties from the drop down list. Choose the Sharing Tab, and click Share This Folder On A Network. Note: sometimes(depending on how much you have in the folder you are trying to share) it can take a little while to apply the sharing permissions to the folder.
Then on the Mac(running leopard) Open a New Finder Window, You can do so by click the Finder Icon(far left, smiling face), An on the Left Side of the window where it shows your Devices, Places, and now there should be an option for Sharing. Under sharing you should see the name of the PC, and when you click on that you will see all the Folders that you had previously shared. Then from there all you have to do is Drag and Drop to the Mac.

I personally think CD’s and DVD’s are a waste of time when you are transferring a large amount of files. Think of it this way, you have to spend time finding all the files you want to transfer. Then wait for them to burn to the disc(depending on your burner, can take a large amount of time), then load that into the Mac, and wait for it to transfer to the Mac.

Hope this helps!
