Is it normal to think about death more as you get older?

Asked by dunkin_donutz (441points) December 23rd, 2009

When I was younger I used to never think about my eventual death. It just never occurred to me. Now I think about it at least once a day. Is that normal as you get older or do I have an unhealthy preoccupation?

I’ll tell you what is happening to me, I have always been a bit of a hypochondriac but that sure is getting worse. I used to get a pain somewhere and think I was getting some horrible disease, now I get a pain and I immediately think I am dying. But so far it hasn’t happened, as you can see.

Yep I would guess one’s mortality becomes more of a reality as we age.

Yes, but even more so as the Reaper takes loved ones.

Absolutely.

With each passing day of your life, the likelyhood of death increases, until finally reaching 1. Or in the wise words of Tyler Durden, ”On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

As your chance to die increases, it is logical to also think of it more.

Interestingly enough, no. I though about death much more when I was younger.

Well I am, I am thinking of things like making sure my will is in order, what will happen to my things upon death, who should get parts of my estate all that. Yeah I think about it a lot, I also think about being frail and I am trying to work that part out in advance.

@Just_Justine That’s not dwelling on death, that’s just being smart. It’s incredibly important to have a durable power of attorney for health care, an advanced directive, and a will or living trust (if you have a lot of assets or kids.)

@Just_Justine I’ve done the same things that you have. I’m ready to check out at any moment and not leave any legal chaos behind me.

That sounds incredibly normal. I am still pretty young, but for someone “older” to think about death more and more makes total sense.

Well, I’m older! Why think about something you have no control over! If it happens, it happens!

Just wait until you hit the age of about 50. every funeral home in the country will be sending you burial literature and begging for you to buy from them. its to the point now, where i do not read any of this junk mail. i just pitch it in with the rest of the junk mail and throw it away. i am 66 and i do not worry about dieing. i know its there and its not going to go away, so, why worry over something you cannot prevent? life is too short as it is. i say enjoy life and make each day count.

Yes this is a normal thing to do. Most people as they get older start to think about things such as life insurance the decisions they made in life and their eventual death.

At this stage of your life you actually have to start planning your death. I have to think about it.

What happens is you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
