What is the history behind the search light atop the Los Angeles City Hall Building:?

City Hall, the tallest building in town when it was completed in 1928, was capped with a revolving aviation beacon dedicated to Charles Lindbergh. The light was extinguished during World War II (because of potential air raids) and then removed. It was rebuilt in 2001 at a cost of $88,500 by the San Francisco firm that lit the Golden Gate Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. Bulbs are $700 a pop, which is one reason the light is activated only during Christmas, on the city’s birthday, on 9/11, and on other occasions deemed special by the city. Approval from the FAA is required every time the blue-white light shines.
