What are some interesting rental businesses to start?

Asked by pallen123 (1519points) December 25th, 2009

I’m intrigued by the rental business. Someone I know used to rent expensive editing machines to movie studios (back when you couldn’t do that sort of thing on an off the shelf computer). What are some interesting things I might be able to rent people? I’m up for anything: entertainment/events, health-related, healthcare, home/garden, business, travel, security, transportation, fitness, craft, fantasy, cooking, anything else? Unusual (and not so unusual) ideas anyone?

Outdoor party furniture. Tables, Chairs, bar, tents, indoor outdoor carpet, a mobile deck. These would keep you busy doing weddings.

How about renting USED CARS ?

people can’t afford to pay high prices for newer rental cars if their car is in the shop for whatever… and a used rental car for a couple of days for like $20 -$30 a day or so would not be so bad ..

A big money maker is construction equipment ! Most companies do not own the heavy equipment use in construction sites, they rent it.
PS: I used to know someone who invested their entire life savings in a store that rented “Shoes and Board Games” They went out of business shortly after !!

Look through Craig’s List with this question in mind. One thing I’ve noticed is that people really NEED box trucks and trailers, for anything from moving furniture, to picking up bale after bale of pine straw and other lanscaping needs. They are always asking for those things from folks. I wish you the best of luck! I think you’re on the right track.

I recommend renting things that do not become quickly outdated and that are durable, costly to purchase for occasional use and in demand by a diverse market, even if only once in a while.

I hope these criteria help you.

Rent your kids out to a couple contemplating having kids of their own.

Rent your house out for the production of porno movies.

Rent out your home movies. Now that’s something I’ve never seen at Blockbuster.

Seriously, though, there is a home based business publication, I don’t recall the name, but it may be Home Based Businesses. They list a number of business, including ratings and so on, that might be a great source of ideas for you. Hope this helps.

If you have a green thumb, many businesses need plants for their entry way. My dentist, dermatologist, and dietician offices all have decorator plants that are provided by a rental service.

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. One of the best rental business I think for the coming time will be health. You can have a micro gym where you can rent time on the equipment by the hour. I know people who either had gym membership they did not use or people who want to use a gym sometimes but the high yearly price scares them off. I think prople will embrace having a gym they can use when they want to and pay as they actually use it.

In Japan there are dog rental services for people who just want a dog for an hour or two. Maybe their apartment is too small or whatever reason. Business is booming for them. True story.
