How long must bamboo dry before you can use it?

Asked by TheGreenBrideGuide (178points) December 25th, 2009

I just received the following question on my company’s Facebook wall and was wondering if anyone can help me answer:

“I’m hoping to make our chuppah & planning to cut down some bamboo that grows wild around here. Does anyone know how long bamboo needs to dry before it can be used for something like this? If it’s not totally dry (wedding is at the beginning of May) will that be a major issue? Thanks!!”

Sounds like a great project. They should harvest mature chutes, at least 5 years old. This shouldn’t be an issue if they are using it for the poles of the Chuppah. They should dry it for a few months. Dry it in the shade and rotate it every so often. When drying any kind of stalk or green wood, you want to keep it from temp. variation, as this would promote cracking. They can pre-split the top and bottom of the chute to prevent the chute from splitting worse in the drying process. Once dry, clean the chutes to remove any lichen or mold that occur. Best of luck!!

@designer_from_AB: Great answer, but you mean “shoots.”
